Ottokar II of Bohemia

Ottokar II (also written Otakar or Přemysl Otakar/Ottokar ) (approximately 1230 - August 26th 1278 has Dürnkrut) is king de Bohême (Raskavie) of 1253 with 1278.

He is the son of Venceslas Ier Premysl and Cunegonde (Czech Kunhuta) of Hohenstaufen, which makes of him the small son of Philippe de Souabe. The alive one of his/her father, it reigns on the Moravie (1247). In 1252, it marries Marguerite (she is 18 years old more than him), sister of Frederic the Fighter and heiress of the Austria and the Styrie.

Ottokar II Přemysl seems the most powerful Czech sovereign of its dynasty. It makes sure the support of the middle-class of the cities and the minor nobility of the knights. It proceeds to a massive colonization with Germans to develop the exploitation of the money mines discovered on the circumference of Bohemia. It takes part in a crusade with the teutonic Chevaliers in Prussia and founds with them the fortress of Königsberg (1254). In Central Europe, following heritages, it annexes the Carinthie, the Carniole and the Styrie, constituting a vast empire, Bohemia with the Adriatique.

In 1260, it overcomes Etienne V of Hungary in Kroissenbrunn. Etienne V must yield to Bohemia the Silesia, the Slovakia, the Lusace, the Austria and the Styrie (1260 - 1269). In 1272, it presents its candidature under “king of the Romans” but is isolated with the profit of Rodolphe Ier de Habsbourg. A war follows in which Ottokar loses all its conquests of the area of the the Alps. In 1276, Rodolphe Ier and its allies put the seat in front of Vienna. The November 26th, Ottokar II of Bohemia yields Austria, Styrie, Carinthie and Carniole with the emperor increasing considerably the power of the Habsbourg. Ottokar preserves only Bohemia and Moravie.

It is overcome and killed with Dürnkrut, in the Marchfeld, close to Vienna by the emperor Rodolphe Ier de Habsbourg (August 26th 1278). Rodolphe puts the Bohemia under its domination and allots the Austrian possessions of overcome. Rodolphe II, sons of the emperor, marry Agnès, girl of Ottokar, and Wenceslas, sons of Ottokar, marry Gutta, girl of Rodolphe.

Ottokar II does not leave any child of its union with Marguerite de Babenberg married in 1252 and which he divorces with the autumn 1261.

He marries then in 1261: Cunégonde (1245 - 1285) girl of Rotislav de Tchernigov and Halicz and little girl of Béla IV of Hungary of which

The famous Austrian writer Franz Grillparzer wrote a drama which appears the fall of Ottokar and the advance of the Habsbourg S: ( the happiness and end of the king Ottokar ). This drama is a reference book in the theaters Austrian.
