Otto Grotewohl

Otto Grotewohl (born the March 11th 1894 with Brunswick, dead the September 21st 1964 with Berlin), German statesman (member of SPD, then as from 1946 of SED). It was Ministerpräsident GDR of 1949 to 1964.

Biography

From 1908 with 1912, it learns how to work in a printing works. After having received its diploma, Grotewohl enters with the SPD. He is also member of the USPD of 1918 with 1922. Of 1920 with 1930, it is appointed SPD with the Landtag of Braunschweig. He becomes Minister for the Education of the free State of Brunswick in 1921 and 1923, Minister of Interior Department and Justice. In 1925, Grotewohl enters to the Reichstag . In 1928, he becomes president of the Landesversicherungsanstalt .

Grotewohl is suspended of its functions by the Nazis in 1933 and must leave Brunswick. It takes refuge then with Hamburg. Starting from 1938, it lives in Berlin where it exerts the trades of wholesaler and industrial representative. He works in the group of resistance of Erich W. Gniffke (member of the SPD him also), which he knew in Brunswick. In August 1938, it is stopped and shown high treason in front of the court of the people. The procedure will be however stopped seven months afterwards.

The June 17th 1945, Otto Grotewohl, Erich W. Gniffke, max Fechner, Gustav Dahrendorf and Hermann Harnisch sign a call to reform the SPD. Grotewohl became president of the central Commission of the SPD and going against certain positions, he decides for the fast union of KPD and SPD.
