Otter

The name of otter indicates different S of Mammifère S carnivorous belonging all to from Lutrinae. This one was created by Charles Lucien Bonaparte (1803-1857) in 1838.

These species are characterized by short legs, webbed fingers with the back legs and a long tail.

Contrary to the Polar bear or the dolphin, the otter does not have a layer of grease under its skin. Its peeling is composed of short and long hairs which are encased to form an impermeable layer preserving of the cold.

Habitat

Fresh Cours d' water for the majority of the species, but the sea otter, as its name indicates it lives in salt water.

Threats

An experiment in the Netherlands showed (thanks to collars radio-transmitters) that the otters are often killed there by vehicles when they try to cross roads. They are also victims of pollution (of the water and/or bioaccumlée by their preys)

    • Lutrogale perspicillata (I. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1826) - Loutre with peeling smoothes
  • kind Pteronura Gray, 1837.
    • Pteronura brasiliensis - giant Loutre.
