History
The history of the city goes up at the time Etruscan, of which civilization flowers in central Italy between 800 av. J. - C. and 200 av. J. - C. Orvieto, called Velzna by the Etruscans, was one of the twelve Etruscan cities most important, belonging to Dodecapolis. Indeed, the Etruscans never constituted a single State, as it was the case of the Romains, but each city was almost independent and, often, in conflict between the others. Orvieto was then conquered by the Romans, who off-set all his inhabitants in current the Bolsena. The Latin name of Orvieto was Volsinii, and it is at the origin of the word Bolsena, the new fatherland of the deportees. They, while speaking about their old residence, called it “the old city”, Urbs Vetus in Latin, a name which following the secular phonetic evolutions became “Orvieto”.With the the Middle Ages, Orvieto lived one period of splendor around the 14th century, when it was a free Commun run and that its influence extended until the Tyrrhenian Sea, in competition with His. Then, to half of the 15th century, the city was annexed by the Papal States, while following the history. The popes chose the city to remain there from time to time, when it were not with Rome.
In 1860, Orvieto, just like the remainder of the Ombrie and the Steps, was released by the army Piedmontese and annexed with the newborn Royaume of Italy. During the Second world war, Orvieto undergoes the Anglo-American bombardments, of which targets it was the flexible railroad Rome with Florence and the north of Italy. However, the historical city, located above a rock, was saved because of its immense historical value and artistic.
