Raimbaud de Reillanne (c.990- † the February 18th 1069)

Subway and archbishop of Arles (May 1030 - † on February 18th, 1069), Raimbaud de Reillanne, probably former provost of this quoted and former monk of Saint-Victor, is one of the most active promoters of the Paix of God and the ecclesiastical reform (Gregorian Réforme) in Provence.

Biography

II belongs to the world of the aristocracy and its design of the world in remainder marked, but it received with the abbey of Saint-Victor of Marseilles a monastic education and it drew the will from it to ensure the spiritual radiation of the Church.

“superb Prelate nourished within a family of raise, where one was fox during the day, wolf during the night; become monk ‑ archbishop, it is presented in the form of “imperator spiritualis”, similar or lion, a symbol of its episcopal city” (Paul Armagier).

It is supported by the Porcelet, lords arlésiens.

In 1032, the Royaume of Burgundy ‑ Provence is attached to the Empire and Raimbaud will act as prelate of the Saint ‑ Empire . In 1046, it takes part in the Concile of Sutri and witnesses Rome, with the crowning of the emperor Henri III which it meets personally.

II intervenes in all the sectors of the ecclesiastical organization of the diocese .

  • the monks of Montmajour must recognize its authority and it intervenes in the conflicts of this abbaye.
  • It organizes the regular life for the twelve canons of its cathedral (chapter of the Cathedral). In 1060, it establishes the first statutes of this community and equips it as of 1061 with sufficient incomes to live, such as for example by yielding the rights of the churches of N.D of Ratis and that of St-Martin, both in the Camargue.

II especially in true chief of the episcopate of Provence behaves. He is the only prelate arlésien 11th century which still affirms the primacy of its seat on the other provençaux dioceses and is essential like active promoter of the Paix of God and the Gregorian Réforme in Provence. He adheres to the convictions reforming mediums of the first age which attach an importance to the monachism and a big role with the emperor, in a species of tradition neo-Carolingian where the princes and the Church are very dependant. II organizes and chairs synods which are held in Arles or in its surroundings: 1037 - 1041, council of Arles on the Peace of God, on September 4th 1042 (or 1044), Council of Saint-Gilles. From 1040, its action engages then in the combat against the Simonie while taking care of an eye attentive with its diocese.

  • It thus associates with the archbishops of Aix which could have disputed its preeminence, to come to be made devote by him and to subscribe a promise of obedience such as for example at the time of the dedication of the archbishop of Aix Rostaing de Fos in 1056.
  • II founds and equips with many places of worship in the presence of its suffrageants: in 1056 with Trets, in the presence of the bishops of Aix and Toulon, dedicatio of Holy the ‑ Trinity of Trets.
  • II participle at assemblies of Languedocien and Catalan bishops. In 1056, it thus chairs the Concile of Toulouse favorable to the reform (celibacy of priests, prohibition of the simony,…) and goes to Barcelona two years (1058) to later attend the dedication of the Church Cathedral of this City.

In spite of this orientation, the Raimbaud archbishop spares until his death the aristocratic families of Provence and endeavors to play a part of intermediary between them and the prelates who represent the pontifical power increasingly present.

He dies on February 18th 1069.

The government of Raimbaud is a top in the history of the Church of Arles.
