Onfroy de Montfort

Onfroy de Montfort , dead the February 12th 1284, was lord of Beirut of 1282 with 1284 and lord of Tyr of 1283 with 1284. It was wire of Philippe Ier de Montfort, lord of Ferté Alais, of Bréthencourt, of Castrate, of Strand and Tyr, and Marie d' Antioche.

He married on October 1st 1274 Echive d' Ibelin (1253 † 1312), girl of Jean d' Ibelin († 1264), lord of Beirut, and Alice of the Rock on Ognon. They had:

  • Amaury de Montfort († 1304)
  • Roupen de Montfort († 1313)
  • a son
  • Alix, or Helvis, alive in 1295.

Died of his/her older sister Isabelle d' Ibelin in 1282, it succeeded to him and became lady of Beirut. The following year, it is the older brother of Onfroy, Jean de Montfort, lord of Tyr, which dies, without children.

A few years earlier, the king Hugues III of Cyprus had confirmed in Montfort the possession of Tyr, reserving the right to take again the stronghold if Jean de Montfort did not have a child. Hugues III let however Onfroy succeed his brother. But this one died six months later, and the new king Henri II, probably because it considered wire of Onfroy too young to ensure the defense of Tyr, took again the stronghold to give it to his brother Amaury.
