History

Beginnings of the club

“Olympic Lyon”, founded general sports club in 1896 under the name of Racing Club of Lyon, obtains a section football in 1899. First club of the Lyonese qualified in final stages of the championship of France of football USFSA (1906), it faces the Olympique of Marseilles in eighth of finale. After a tie 2-2, the Lyoneses do not go to Marseilles for rejouer the meeting.

Eclipsed by FC Lyon in 1908 and 1909, the Olympic one finds the championship of France in 1910. Drawing aside Besancon (4-1), the Lyoneses incline 5-0 vis-a-vis the Swiss Stade of Marseilles, in quarterfinals. Become “university Olympic Lyon”, the club is still present in championship of France USFSA in 1913 and is eliminated in eighth from finale (5-1) by Saint-Raphaël. The “LOU” evolves/moves then at the stage of the Irises while waiting for the end of the construction of the Stade of Gerland in 1920.

The LOU joined the professional rows in 1942 and removes, with two points in advance on Bordeaux, the southern hen of the last championship of war. The national final of the championship opposes Lyon to Rouen. Rouennais are essential 4-0. These good performances collected in time of war make it possible the LOU to be promoted in Division 1 with the resumption of the season 1945 - 1946. The club, chaired then by Felix Louot, is relegated in D2 at the end of the season.

In May 1950, of the strong dissensions between the sections Football and Rugby of the LOU cause the departure of the section football, pros and amateurs. The latter chooses a new name then: “Olympic Lyonese”. In counterpart with this war football-Rugby, the LOU is interdict of football during two seasons by the League of the Lyonese. After these 24 months of interdict, free with the LOU of refonder a new section football in its center, which it did, by creating on the occasion a new club, with new number of affiliation with the FF, which exists today still. This section football LOU “2” cannot in no case to claim to recover the history and the honors glanés by the LOU “1”.

“Lyon founded in 1950” is one of the great classics of the historiography of the French foot. Some evoke a voluntary liquidation to explain the fracture of 1950, but not of trace of voluntary liquidation in Lyon in 1950. The history is more sulfurous, with one of the episodes of the war football-Rugby involving the departure of the section football of a general sports structure. In these cases, there is not “foundation” of club. It is the section football which only counts here and it continues its existence under another name.

Often placed, but never gaining

  • the OL thus makes its entry in D1 in 1951 to go down again at once in D2 in 1952 after being classified in the penultimate place. Promoted in 1954, they then begin a long period in the first division punctuated by two periods records. They discover Europe out of Cut of the towns of fair in 1958 in San Siro with an elimination (0-7; 1-1) vis-a-vis Inter Milan. Then in 1960 (this competition is exploited 2 years then) they are beaten (2-4; 2-1) by Hamburg and finally in 1961 eliminated (4-2; 2-5) by Sheffield Wednesday.

  • After being itself classified between 8th and the 16th place of the championship during nearly 10 years, they reach the 5th place in 1963 and even the fourth in 1964. It is especially this year that they gain their first trophy. Indeed, after having failed the previous year finally vis-a-vis Monaco author of doubled Cut-Championship, they gain the Coupe de France 1964 finally by beating the Of Gironde ones of Bordeaux 2-0 after having eliminated Lens in quarters and Valencians in semi-finals. This same year, as a finalist of preceding the Coupe de France - and since the winner, the ACE Monaco, takes part in the Cut of Europe of the clubs champions, the OL makes its great beginnings out of Cut of the Cuts. The arrival of the Rhone-native club in the competition is crashing to pieces: After having eliminated Boldklubben 1913 (3-1; 3-1), they eliminate Olympiakos (4-2; 1-2) then make a success of the exploit in quarters vis-a-vis Hamburg which they eliminate (1-1; 2-0). In semi-final, they are held in failure in Gerland by Sporting Club of Portugal 0-0 before going to seek a tie 1-1 in Lisbon. But, unfortunately for the Lyoneses, the rule of the goal outside will be application later only a few years (For the anecdote in the files of the UEFA, it is indicated that the OL is qualified finally thanks to the goal marked outside). They must thus play a match of support in Madrid where they are demolished 0-1, letting the Portuguese go finally, which they gain vis-a-vis the MTK Budapest. This first European epopee does not reproduce at the time of the following edition where they are eliminated as of the first turn by the FC Oporto (0-3; 0-1).
  • Sixth in 1965, they find the following years the monotony of the medium of classification. Monotony which will be disturbed in 1967 by a second championship victory of France (3-1 vis-a-vis Sochaux finally). This victory enables them to find the Cut of the Cuts in which they eliminate Aris Bonnevoie (3-0; 2-1) then Tottenham (1-0; 3-4) before falling on Hamburg in quarterfinals (0-2; 2-0; 0-2 in match of support).

  • a new cycle starts during the Seventies where they again reach the 5th place in 1972 and are placed for the first time of their history on the podium of the championship of France in 1974 and 1975, far behind the ADZE, champion of France these two years there. They finally gain the edition 1973 of the Coupe de France by beating the FC Nantes Atlantique 2 goals with 1, at the same time preventing them from carrying out doubled the Cut-Championship which was promised to them. In spite of these blows of glare, never the OL is not able to mix with the fight for the title even if the club starts to become one accustomed of the Cut of the Cuts of which it still reaches the eighth of finales in 1974.

  • At the end of the Seventies, the cycle is finished and the team finds the last places of the championship with in particular one 18th place into 1980 which makes him come very close to relegation. A victorious stopping vis-a-vis Avignon (0-2, 6-0) saves, for a time, the situation, just a year before the ADZE does not gain its 10th championship. Never, sentence pronounced by the president of the Greens in the years 1970 celebrates it, Roger Rocher “As regards football, Lyon was always the suburbs of Saint-Etienne” then has as much direction only at this moment. Finally relegated at the conclusion of the season 1982-1983, the Lyoneses, who then hold the record of the more consecutive long period in the elite with 29 seasons, begin long a 6 years purgatory.

The apogee Leagues 1 of them

In 1987, after a few last years in D2, Jean-Michel Aulas is invested in the club and takes the direction of it. It ambitionne a “ European qualification in the 5 years ”. Although it surprises by almost unloading entry the trainer Robert Nouzaret, one of the symbols of the club, the increase in D1 is acquired since 1989, grace inter alia to the coaching gaining Raymond Domenech, today selector of the team of France. The announced European qualification is even reached after only two seasons in the elite, president Aulas then carrying out the bet of “Europe in five years” which it had launched on his arrival. But the club comes very close to relegation the following season.

In 1995, the OL returns on the podium, finishing 2nd behind Nantes untouchable this year, thanks to a generation of players trained with the club, whose symbol is assailing the Florian Maurice. The following year, the club takes taste with the Coupe of Europe, in particular eliminating the Lazio from Rome.

It finds the continental competitions in 1997, by the small door, that of the Intertoto, more to leave them until 2006. Indeed, the team is reinforced each year and goes up in power: 6th in 97/98, then 3rd in 98/99 and 99/00. In 1999, the contribution of 15 million euros of the Pathé group who becomes shareholder to a total value of 34% makes it possible Jean-Michel Aulas to insert the club in a new era by offering an attacker of reputation: Sony Anderson. The Brazilian striker coming from FC Barcelona will become one of the players emblématiques of the history of the Olympic Lyonese. In 2000/01 the club finishes 2nd behind FC Nantes (like 6 years before), but gains the Coupe of the League.

It is in 2002 that the Olympic Lyonese ends up obtaining its first title in Champion of France, by gaining the first “finale of the championship of France”: indeed before the last day, the OL is second of the championship two points behind Lens, which it accommodates in Gerland and beats 3-1. Then begin a new series of six consecutive titles. The Olympic Lyonese thus becomes extensive, as well on the national plan as on the European scene (even if to today the forever last club the course of the quarterfinals of the Ligue of the Champions). The club inflates its budget and comes to settle in the G14 (lobby of the 18 most important clubs of Europe). Between the title of 2002 and that of 2007, manpower was renewed to 80% and the succession (without dismissal) of the three trainers who are Jacques Santini, Paul Le Guen and Gerard Houllier did not call into question the stability guaranteed by the duet Bernard Lacombe/Jean-Michel Aulas which mainly explains the current success of the club.

The OL falls in Rennes, on November 4th, 2006, which prevents it glaner a new record, namely to gain 10 matches of continuation in the championship of France, record fellow-prisoner by the ACE Saint-Etienne, the Girondins of Bordeaux, and the Stade of Rheims, three clubs with the glorious past. But Lyon beats the record of best all the same starts season: 16 victories, 2 null for 1 defeat. After such a beginning of the season the club starts to dream to reach the 100 points in the year (what reached forever), but bad January (punctuated by an elimination out of cut of France vis-a-vis OM) the fact quickly déchanter.

March 6th, 2007, the OL is made eliminate into 1/8 from finale from the Ligue from the champions by the ACE Rome, which has constituted its worse result for 4 years. March 31st, the OL loses the final of the cut of the league against Bordeaux.

As of on April 21st, rare performance, the OL is champion of France 5 matches before the end of the season. The club equalizes its record of the greatest number of victories outside, however following an end of season in free wheel it finishes at 3 points of its record of the greatest number of marked points.

Infrastructures

The OL has developed for several years under the crook of its president. Now, the OL it is OL Phone, OL Voyages, OL Conduite, OL coffee, OL Gourmet, OL Boissons, OL Music, OL Coiffure, OL Taxi. One can add to that, a restaurant and a partnership with the club of Lyons ball CRO LYON.

The present stage is the Stade Gerland. Inaugurated in May 1926, it was renovated in 1984 at the time of the Euro of football, like in 1998 at the time of the football world cup. With a declared capacity of 41.044 places (but a real capacity from 39.514 to 41.044 for the football games, according to the site of the unfavourable supporters), the rate of filling is, for season 2005/2006, of 96,11% in championship and 100% in League of the Champions. The project of a new stage is being studied with the Town of Lyon. This one, of a capacity from 55.000 to 60.000 places, would accommodate a museum, a center of sport, a center of fitness, a swimming pool and a shopping mall. The future center of drive should be moved beside the new stage. This complex should be born from here 2010 beside Lyon, in Décines.

The center of current drive is Tola Vologe. One finds there also the seat of the club and the billetery.

Supporters

The club counts also several groups of supporters to the more or less official statute. Most important is that of the

  • Bad Gones ”, created in 1987, which occupies the Lower Northern Turn of the stage of Gerland. The Olympic Lyonese was then a modest club of D2! Proof that Lyons enthusiasm does not go back that to the years 2000 as that is often prejudged. In 2007 (against Strasbourg), this group will celebrate its 20 years of existance, which does of it one of the oldest group of supporters in France. It is the “heart” of the stage and it is with him, like with the
  • Cosa Nostra Lyon ” with the Lower Southern Turn, than Gerland owes its environment. The group of “Cosa Nostra Lyon” was born in 2007 and is resulting from the regrouping of two groups which were the “ Lugdunum' S ”, created in 1993, whereas the OL vegetated in medium of classification of Division 1, and the “ Nucléo Ultra ”, created in 2000, which occupied already the Southern Turn, with an aim of giving more homogeneity to the platform.
There also exists of other associations like the
  • Hex@gones ” with the Southern Turn (this group with for goal to join together supporters of the OL not living on the region of Lion), the
  • Rouge and Blue ”, and the
  • Gastrogones ” of the platform Jean Bouin, as well as the
  • O' They Club ” of the platform Jean Jaurès.
Three other groups distributed of shares and others of the stage. They are the
  • Handi-Sup-OL ”, created in 2005, placed at the handicapped places of the platforms Jean Bouin and Jean Jaures, of the
  • Gones 58 ”, created in 2006, and of the
  • Gones 26 ”, created in 2007 .
These two last are placed everywhere in the stage, and gather supporters respective departments.

Change of platforms…

- With its creation, the group of the Bad Gones occupied the side trinune of Jean Bouin.

- With its creation, the group of the Lugdunum' S occupied the side platform of Jean Bouin.

The two main reasons which pushed with this change of platform are the blaze of the price of the places, and which the fact that the “place of supporting” is behind the goal.

- With its creation, the group of the " Nucléo Ultra" occupied the Northern Turn, at the sides of the " Bad Gones". At the following season, " Nucléo Ultra" left the Northern Turn, to join the " Lugdunum' s" with the Southern Turn. This for a simple reason of mentality (not same ideas in the world of the platforms) which differed.

At the time of the restoration of the stage, for the World cup 1998, the Bad Gones and the Lugdunum' S shared the Southern Turn, then the Northern Turn during the rebuilding of these platforms. These new Turns never achieved besides the unanimity within these groups of supporters because of their too large opening between the 2 levels, letting pass from the wind and drafts to engulf itself there, which attenuates the songs of the supporters considerably.
