Transportation situation and routes
-
the borough located very close to the Vire is by the road D 86 to 7 km of Saint-Lo, chief town of the department. Transfers, 118 km long coastal river (or 115), takes its source in extreme cases of the Manche, the Calvados and the Orne, at an altitude of approximately 300 m. It constitutes a natural border of the commune on all its south-western part. Very close to the north-eastern limit a four-lane road passes, since 2005 (NR 176), which leads to the highway A 84 with about fifteen kilometers.
-
a way of Railroad, unused for a few years (very rare trains since 1995), has spanned the Vire very close to the church by a bridge of the type Eiffel builds in 1890. A highway-bridge in service in 1949 also crosses Transfers it in the vicinity. It replaces the bridge launched into 1902 which, bombarded by the United States Air Force but ever reached, was destroyed in 1945 by the Germans; at the time of their retirement, German tried to block the progression of the allied troops. This bridge was the twin brother of the bridge of railroad.
-
Since the end of the 17th century at least, a precarious bridge called “ the boards of co.-Suzanne ”, gave access the common neighbor, Mancellière-on-Transfers It.
Au time of the barges, those sailed on the Vire and discharged from materials to the “ port of Holy-Suzanne ”. The last barge would have passed in 1932, six years after the downgrading of Vire like inland waterway.
Historical reference marks
-
the Paroisse depended on the Doyenné of Torigni-sur-Vire (in the past Thorigny) and on the diocese of Bayeux. Holy-Suzanne-on-transfer, as other communes in the west of the Vire, belongs to the department of the Manche since its creation in 1790. The parish was incorporated in the deanery of Saint-Lo and the Diocèse of Coutances in 1802, just after the Concordat of 1801 which restored the unit of the Église.
-
the 12th century had seen patronage co.-Suzanne to pass to the hands Priory of Saint-Fromond pertaining to the diocese of Bayeux. That resulted from the donation of the church (primitive) from Holy-Suzanne to the monks of Saint-Fromond. Gift made by Marie de Thaun, and Hodierne of Holy-Suzanne, wife of Guillaume Corbel, following the taking the cloth in the monastery by Nicolas, wire of Hodierne.
Although Holy-Suzanne depends on Saint-Fromond, Henri Corbel is Seigneur and owner in 1356. But of the badly known difficulties appear very quickly; of Carentan, of Pouilly appear in transactions. In 1588, Robert de Brébeuf is noted like Noble parish. His/her Georges son is the lord in 1623. From Aubigny come then of which Jean Campion d' Aubigny, brother-in-law of Georges de Brébeuf who precedes. Henry-Anne Bernard d' Aubigny is lord and owner of the parish in 1699. The Bernard d' Aubigny are it always in 1774, but remain with Saint-Amand (close to Thorigny). In 1808, the family of Aubigny, in the person of Pink remaining with Valognes, loses any fastener with Holy-Suzanne after sale of her goods.
-
Under the Revolution, in 1792, appears like emigrants one named Courvalet and Jean-Baptiste Lerebour, priest Réfractaire whose family remains with Holy-Suzanne. The Lerebour abbot then becomes Aumônier of Louis de Bourbon, Prince de Condé, at the time of his exile. The Cleaned of the parish, Good Pinabel which lends oath to the civil Constitution of the clergy, retracts. He is imprisoned with the castle of Thorigny and is released after July 28th, 1794 with the fall of Robespierre.
L' church, which one hid the statues and who was returned to the worship in 1800, does not seem to have undergone important damage during agitation, this one having been limited on a side to some heads overheated by the republican ideas and other to the mutilation of the planted tree of freedom. It however was put on sale like Bien national, but without continuation. A purchaser projected to demolish it and to make use of the remains to replace the “ boards ” and to build a new bridge on Transfers. On the other hand, the presbytery was sold the 11 Prairial year IV before being rehabilitated in 1822. Damaged by the bombardments of 1944, it was demolished in 1956.
The church, public edifices and private
-
the church is classified historic building since March 3rd, 1931.
Elle date of the 15th century as thought it Mr. de Gerville who dealt much with archeology in the Manche, while implying that it could be beginning of the next century. It is of Gothic style blazing, but one raises a certain inequality in the construction industry which does not deteriorate of it the value and its recognized charm of the visitors. The nave makes following the chorus, directly without transept. A small quasi central bell-tower shelters the single bell which goes back to 1903, whereas there were two of them (remelted under the Révolution) and a small bell. The bays are surmounted very varied clover and quatrefoils; one of them comprises elegant a Fleur of lily. A Romance arc on a small door is perhaps a vestige of the primitive church.
-
Like the keystones, the corbels on which put back the arches comprise sculptures which deserve the attention. The attributes of the four evangelists, and the characters being able to be testimonys of events in the parish are represented there. The beautiful arcade which separates the nave from the chorus supports a beam of glory with sculptor wood: the Christ in cross (XVIIIe S.), the Virgin painful and holy Jean the evangelist (XVIIe S. - XVIIIe S.) registered voters with the inv. supplém. from Mr. H. since 1988.
Une statue of wood Sainte Suzanne of XIIe S. classified Mr. H. since 1954 disappeared in 1967.
-
the stained glasses go back to 1952 and 1956. Large the Prophets, 4 evangelists, of the scenes of the Old Testament, the life of the Christ and characters of the Christian era whose Martyr E of Sainte Suzanne in IIIe S. retain the glance.
-
Two sites are recognized: Aubigny of which the oldest parts also go up in XVIe S. as well as the commun runs of Brébeuf of XVIe S. the castle of Brébeuf (even place), obviously a rebuilding, is of later time. (private places)
-
the school is a construction of 1956 accommodating two mixed classes. A teaching regrouping with the commune of Baudre exists since 1990. Before, the school was where is the canteen scolaire.
Dans an older past, it is with the current and primitive site of the Mairie (of partly preserved original aspect) that a school of the boys was open on a plan of 1838. The construction of a school of the girls had difficulties of being carried out. It leads only about 1863, and it was with the site of the canteen. But in 1925, there was no more that one co-educational school at this place, and still after 1945 when a hut was added. The hut become village hall was replaced by a new construction with the same use in the year 2000.
Noticed characters
-
the family of Brébeuf left a strong print with Holy-Suzanne-on-Transfers and Condé-sur-Vire, parish close. Two as of theirs would have been at the sides of William the Conqueror to the Bataille of Hastings in 1066, and Saint Louis in Egypt at the time of the catch of Damiette in 1249. Of old nobility, the family carries the armorial bearings: “of money to startled ox armed with gold points”.
-
Georges de Brébeuf, forgotten poet, translator of the Pharsale of Lucain, and on the occasion décrié by the poet criticizes Boileau, is also the author of a translation of VIIe delivers of Énéide. One still owes him the “solitary Talks”, the “poetic Praises”, of the epigrams. Glanes of Civil statue of scholars indicate to us that it has two brothers and a sister born with Holy-Suzanne. But makes any certainty for the poet of it, in 1617 or 18 in this parish, not more than with Torigni-sur-Vire where the ratification of the treaty of marriage of his/her parents took place, and where his/her father was lawyer (disappeared original sources).
Le Poète is the nephew of Saint Jean de Brébeuf, whose family of Condé-sur-Vire to “ Boissaie remained parish”, village divided with Holy-Suzanne. Jean was the apostle evangelist of the Huron to the Canada and martyrisé by the Iroquois (1593 - 1649). Canonized in 1930, it is honoured by a stained glass in the church with Holy-Suzanne, and a vault close to the ruins of the family home (1993).
C' is close to Caen, with Venoix, that the poet had to die in 1661 in the parish where his/her Nicolas brother was prior-priest.
-
the abbot Jean-Baptiste Lerebour, Chaplain of the Prince de Condé at the time of his exile in 1792 and which lost the toes, by its irreproachable control was extremely estimated. On its return, it returns to Holy-Suzanne in its family and becomes cleaned parish. Administrative reforms consider the removal of the commune to the profit of two common neighbors, Baudre and Condé-sur-Vire. It fights then while being addressed to the authorities diocésaines to prevent this division; only limits were changées.
Son handicap obliged it to move with horse in the parish. It is deceased there in 1822.
-
the Desurvire abbot was Curé of the Paroisse during 43 years. What it reports in the “ ecclesiastical Conférences ” ordered by Mgr Bravard in 1866, within sight of the rigor of the investigation, makes of him a reliable source on events during the three quarter centuries which precede. Died in 1905, it rests in the cemetery of the parish.
Population
There were 16 fires or dwellings in 1455, with the 6 poor. In 1467: 20 fires, the 2 poor, and one mentions 2 Noble S. In 1722: 92 fires, and in 1765: 91 fires.
Between 1656 and 1800, one raises on average 12 to 13 births, a little less than 10 deaths and a little more than 3 marriages by année.
La Population reaches a maximum of 525 inhabitants in 1828. The Cadastre realized in 1835 could modify limits; that could explain the curious fall in 1839. After 1841, the population decrease to be stabilized around 300 inhabitants between 1901 and 1968, while passing by the minimum of 284 in 1931. It increases regularly since 1968 and borders 530 hearts in 2006.
La publication of a census in the almanacs appears 1 year, even 2 years afterwards, from where one year possible variations in spite of the corrections.
