Edwin Powell Hubble (November 20th 1889 - September 28th 1953) is a American astronomer , it showed that the Univers is in expansion.

Biography

Hubble is born with Marshfield in the Missouri. He studies the Mathématiques and the Astronomie with the Université of Chicago where he obtains his diploma in 1910. Holder of a grant, it spends then 3 years to the Université of Oxford where it obtains a Master off Arts in Droit.

He returns quickly to astronomy to the Observatoire Yerkes, where he receives his Ph.D. in 1917. Hauls, the founder and director of the Observatoire of the Mount Wilson, close to Pasadena in California, proposes a post of researcher to him. He continues there his work until the end of his life. The September 28th 1953, it dies of a Cerebral vascular accident.

Work

Its arrival with the Wilson mount coincides more or less with the completion of the Hooker telescope of 250 cm, the most powerful telescope at the time. Observations made with this telescope by Hubble in 1923 - 1924 make it possible to establish that the “Nébuleuse S” observed previously with less powerful telescopes do not form part of our Galaxy, but constitute others Galaxie S distant. He announces his discovery the December 30th 1924. The first identified nebula as a galaxy is not M31 (the Galaxy of Andromède), but the small galaxy NGC 6822 located in the Constellation of the Sagittarius (1925). Will follow then M33 (the Galaxy of the Triangle) in 1926 and M31 in 1929.

In 1929, in collaboration with Milton Humason, Hubble establishes, thanks to the Spectroscopie, the relation between the distance from the galaxies and them Speed of distancing, known currently under the name of Loi of Hubble , at the origin of the concept of Expansion of the universe.

He is prize winner of the Franklin Médaille in 1939 for his work on the Nébuleuse S. He receives the Gold medal of Royal Astronomical Society in 1940. The Space telescope Hubble was named in its honor, as well as the Astéroïde (2069) Hubble. He discovered the asteroid (1373) Cincinnati the August 30th 1935.

In 1953, the Télescope Hauls of 5,08 m of the Observatoire of the Mount Palomar is completed. Hubble was the first to use it but dies little of time afterwards.
