Odorous Sweet flag

The odorous sweet flag ( Acorus calamus ) or odorous snap ring is a plant Herbacée watery, perennial, rhizomateuse of the family of the Acoracée S.

Its others vernacular names are: aromatic reed , true sweet flag , canes aromatic .

Description

The sheets are linear. The Inflorescence consists of a spadice carrying tiny greenish flowers and of a Spathe which hardly differs from the sheets.

Surface of distribution

This species, native in Asia, was imported in XIIIe century in Europe for its odoriferous and insecticidal properties. It is naturalized there but does not produce a Fruit S, because the imported plants are generally triploid deads.

Properties

It contains beta-Asaron , (jusqu´à eight tenth following the source), which is Cancérigène S and influential negatively on fruitfulness. The variety Americanus practically does not contain a beta-Asaron , whereas the plants coming from India have the strongest concentration.

Use

The Tartar S employed it to disinfect their drink water.

By distillation one can extract from the rhizomes a essential Huile also used in Parfumerie.

In certain countries, it is used to scent the Bière or the Eau-de-vie.
