Oakland, as the remainder of the California of North, became a possession of the Spain in 1772 following the discovery of the area by the Spanish explorers. Between the end of the 18th century and the first decades of the 19th century, Oakland belonged to a rich person landowner, Luís María Peralta which called its grounds Rancho San Antonio . With the approach of its death in 1842, Peralta divided its ground so that its four sons inherit each one of a portion this one. Most of the current city was then shared by Antonio Mara and Vincent, who opened it with colonization.
The development with large scales of the city began after the conquest of the California with the the United States during the Mexico City-American Guerre, and with the Gold rush of 1848. Oakland was founded in 1852 and grows thanks to the arrival of the railroad. It was an important railway center in the Années 1870. Oakland quickly annexed the cities and colonies located in the vicinity. Its industrial growth led to the construction of a channel in 1902 which created the island of Alameda and allowed the construction of the port of Oakland. In 1906 its population increased considerably, because of arrival of the survivors of the earthquake (and the fire which followed) of San Francisco. During the Second world war the industry of naval construction was fully requested and attracted very many workers since all the country. Much of them was afroaméricains coming from the states of south-west (Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas) which lived in prosperity lasting these years. Unfortunately, and as well as auto industry, the shipbuilding industry stopped, just like employment concerned. Many of those which had come for this kind from work decided to remain in Oakland while others moved in the suburbs under development in the north and the south of the limits of the city.
At the end of the Years 1960, Oakland, which had been rather thrives before the war, was dominated by a population much poorer than before. The current reputation of the high level of criminality is related to this transformation.
