Nylon

The nylon is the name of a Plastic of the type Polyamide used like textile Fiber; he was invented the February 28th 1935 by Wallace Carothers which worked then at Dupont, a company of American Chimie . He is obtained by hot condensation of a body having two acid functions and of a body derived from ammonia.

History

Nylon was patented (makes three of them Brevet S U.S. Obvious 2130523,2130947 and 2130948 of Sept. 20, 1938), but the term nylon is not a registered trademark, it does not have thus to be written with an initial capital. Dupont (as this company recalls it on its Web site) thus chose to make it possible the word to become synonymous with bottom (nylon); in 1992 the company deposits its registered trademark for nylon under the term tactel .

The discovery was for the first time marketed in 1938 with a first product, a Brosse with tooth whose hairs were out of nylon left the same year (the February 24th).

In 1940 left a product which was going to mark the history of nylon, the Bas for woman.

In 1941, for the entry in war of the the United States of America, the material (used for the fabrics of Parachute S) was affublé sentence Now You Lousy Old Japanese (“With you maintaining, old disgusting Japanese! ”) or Now You' ve Japanese Lost Old (“You now lost old Japanese! ”).

Etymology

He circulates of many etymologies on the origin of the word nylon as those affirming that nylon comes from NY (New York) and LON (London), or of the first name of the wives of the inventors. Its inventor, Wallace Carothers, being committed suicide before giving a trade name to his polyamide 66, it returned to a committee of three members of in Dupont to make the choice in 1938. One of the members Dr. E.K.Gladding proposed " Norun" (for No run is does not fray ), and changed at once into " Nuron" to avoid a misleading advertizing, while thus rimant with Ray or cotton , which was finally deformed in nylon to have an acronym pronounced in the same way for American and English. This official version of Dupont, to also see them publication (Context, vol. 7, No 2,1978), was perverted at once by some jokers in Now You Japanese Old Roofing stone or Now You Lousy Old Japanese , with a success such as Dupont commissioned in 1941 a Japanese newspaper to contradict this racist etymology there.

Characteristics

Chemically, nylon is a Polymère of condensation, fact of units repeated dependant between them by the connections Amide, it thus forms part of the family of the Polyamide S. Actuellement, nylon can indicate the whole of Polyamide S, like polyamide-11, or Rilsan, more commonly called the French nylon .

In addition to its applications in the field of the textile industries, this material is also used in massive form to carry out machine elements (in particular industry Automobile). One can then mould it hot (it belongs to the Thermoplastique S) or machine the semi-finished products which one finds in trade (bars, plates, etc).

The resistance and especially rubbing qualities of nylon make of it a material of choice for the small parts of friction, in particular in food industry. More precise details can be found on this subject in Wikilivre of tribology, in particular in the chapter which treats materials usable for friction.

Its weak absorptivity makes of it a fabric which dries quickly. Combustion is accompanied by a fusion in droplets which prohibits it, in fact, to be used for the working clotheses.

Woven with a flat wire not textured, it is useful for the linings, the Blouse S, the Tablier S, the sport clothing, the Imperméable S, the Jupe S and the pleated shirt S and the Lingerie.
Woven with a textured wire, it is useful for the Bas, the Sticking, the Chaussette S, the Under-sweater S, the bathing suits, Justaucorps.
