Nyamwezi

The Nyamwezi , also called the Wanyamwezi , are one of the ethnic independent groups of the Tanzania. They live in the north-western zone of the country, between the Lake Victoria and the Lac Rukwa. The word nyamwezi is of origin Swahili, and results in “the people of the Moon”. This name was given by the inhabitants of the coast to indicate that Nyamwezi came from the west (where the the Moon rises). Nyamwezi have close cultural links with the people Sukuma.
