Nuclear plant of Quad Cities

The Nuclear plant of Quad Cities is located close to Cordova in the Illinois on the the Mississippi. The name of the power station comes from the four known close cities under the name of Quad Cities:

  • Bettendorf and Davenport in the Iowa,
  • Moline and Rock'n'roll Island in Illinois.

Description

The power station is equipped with two ebullient water reactors (REB) built by General Electric:
  • Quad Cities 1 : 855 MWe (*), brought into service in 1972 per 40 years (2012).
  • Quad Cities 2 : 855 MWe, brought into service in 1972 per 40 years (2012).
(*) the capacity of the engine n°1 passed from 762 MWE at the origin to 855 MWe.

The power station of Quad Cities belongs to Exelon which in is also the operating one and which roughly produces 1700 MWe on the whole on this site.

Incidents

In March 2002, during a test to justify an increase in power of the old ebullient water reactors, the engine Quad Cities 2 started to vibrate. It was stopped on March 29th following escapes in the checking circuit of the turbine. After the restarting in April, the vibrations caused the rupture of a drain of the principal vapor line, the line was repaired and a restarting was carried out on June 7th. June 18th it became obvious that the increase in power caused damage what led to the reduction of the power but the evil being made, the section was stopped for repairs on July 11th. The problem came from a hole in the vapor drier which has repaired and consolidated being. The section n°2 is started again on June 21st, 2002. The vapor drier was damaged once again on May 28th, 2003 with important a fissure.

These successive incidents did not discourage the NRC which continued the test routine designed to justify increases in power on the other water reactors bouillante.
