History

Toponymy

Nottaway derives from nadowe, word which means snake and which the tribes algonquines used to indicate or describe their enemies, in particular the Iroquois. Moreover the Cris call this river Natuweu Nipi, river of the foreign Indians and the word Iroquois, in dialect mistassin, says Nottaweou. The Lemoine father, as for him, quite simply translated Nottaway by river of Iroquois. The presence of specific Iroquois in this area, to nowadays identify a river tributary of Nottaway and a fall, finds its explanation in the rather remote history. With the XVIIe century, indeed, Iroquois invaded the territory algonquin located close to the James bay, by borrowing the river which will be known later under the name of Nottaway.
