In the Music, the word note can take on a certain number of significances, more or less dependant.
The note, a symbol solfegic
Since the end of the the Middle Ages, in the Western music - and more precisely, in the erudite music or the music which refers to it -, the note of music is a Symbole charged with the Représentation of the two main features of the Its musical - with knowing its height and its lasted .-
the note of music is thus literally “ noted ” on a partition, in order to be read by the musician interprets - the musical Notation rests on the Solfège.
Duration of the notes
The lasted of the notes relates to the rhythmic musical theory more particularly, i.e., horizontal dimension of the musical theory. The relative duration of the note is mainly indicated by means of its form - called “figure of note”.-
For more information on the representation of the duration of the notes in the musical theory, to consult the following articles: Time, Division of time, Representation of the durations, Unit of time, Connection of prolongation, Not of prolongation and Measurement.
Height of the notes
The height of the notes relates to more particularly the intonation, i.e., vertical dimension of the musical theory. The relative height of the note is mainly indicated by means of its position on the carried - the acute are located in the “top” of the range, the serious , in “bottom”.For more information on the representation the height of the notes in the musical theory, to consult the following articles: Cycle of the seven notes , Provision of the notes on the range , Deterioration , diatonic Scale , Your , Semitone , Interval and Tuning fork .

The note, a name of note
By derivation, the note of music returns more precisely to a Nom associated with a height. The series of the names being used to indicate the heights varies according to the cultures and the musical systems.-
Whatever the musical system, the names of notes contained in the series are of limited number: generally, they follow one another inside a framework called octave which can reproduce ad infinitum. For more information on this question, to consult the article Equivalence of the octaves.
-
the name of a note must be distinguished from the degree.
-
For example, in the tonal System, C is the first degree - or tonic - “Tonalité of C”, but it is also IIe degree - or Sus-tonique - “tonality of B flat”, or, IVe degree - or Sous-dominante - “tonality of ground”, etc - to see hereafter.
Names of notes in the Western music
As regards the Western music and Musical theory, two series of names of notes coexist.
-
the series made up of the Syllabe S C, D, semi, F, ground, the and if , promoted by GUI of Arezzo at the 11th century, were adopted by the Latin countries.
-
the series made up of the letter S of the Alphabet has (it), B (if), C (C), D (D), E (semi), F (F) and G (ground), inherited the ancient Greece, were adopted by the Anglo-Saxon and Germanic countries. The letter B indicates for the Anglo-Saxons the note if, whereas for the Germanic ones it indicates B flat. The latter allot the letter H to so natural.

Names of notes in the nonWestern musical systems
Among the nonWestern musical systems, some adopted the nomenclatures above, others preserved specific names, whose origin is sometimes very old as in the Indian music which has as notes the Svara. The seven Svara are: Its, IH, Ga, My, Pa, Da, Ni
The note, a musical sound
By abuse language, and in the familiar register, the note of music can also indicate a Its musical unspecified, including its four traditional characteristics, lasted, height, intensity and stamp.-
For example, if one says “ It bought a trumpet, but it forever been able to leave it only one note ”, that is equivalent to “… it forever been able to leave only one sound it. ”
Note and degree
Whatever the musical system taken into account, the degree indicates before a a whole relative height pertaining to a musical scale given - the latter consisting of a certain number of degrees separated by as many intervals. Within a musical scale, a degree is thus a note of music comparison with others, this, in a melody way - succession of notes - or harmonic - simultaneities of notes.
Traditional Western scales
The scales traditionally used by the Western music are the diatonic scale and the chromatic scale, on which were built the mode S, the Tonalité S and the range S as well as the agreement S.-

Note and frequency
All Its musical - therefore, all note of music - has a Fréquence naturally. However, before attaching a precise frequency to a note of music, it is advisable to wonder about the associated musical context. The manner of granting different the degree S from a musical scale given - in other words, manner of adjusting the frequencies of the notes - found solutions different according to the times, the instruments, and the standard of music. Indeed, from the point of view of the frequencies, there does not exist “a” ideal scale , but “several” possible scales : some are qualified “natural scales”, others, “moderate scales” - i.e., simplified . Thus same a range - even Tonality and even mode - will be able to differently sound according to the type of agreement selected.
Consequently, rather than to associate a absolute height with the notes - “ such note equalizes such frequency, such other note equalizes such other frequency, etc ” -, it is appropriate, for a type of scale belonging to a precise musical context, to seek the choice of the most relevant agreement - i.e., best the reports/ratios of frequency , that is to say best the relative heights.
-
Seule the frequency of the Diapason - or rather, the frequency “of a” Tuning fork, because this one varied according to the times - must be regarded as a “absolute frequency” being used as starting point with such or such type of agreement.
-
Concerning this one, one can thus say for example: “ currently , the frequency of the the is of 440 Hz. ”
