Not prolongation

In the Musical theory, the not of prolongation is a sign, placed after a figure of note or silence, making it possible to prolong the duration of this figure in a precise and quantifiable way - to the difference of the Point of organ.

  • Since approximately 1750, the duration of the point of prolongation is always equal to half of the preceding value - that this one is a figure, or another point. Thus one can distinguish: the ordinary point - simply called “not” -, the double dot and the triple not.

  • Before this time, it arrives that the point of prolongation indicates that it is necessary to prolong the note which carries it duration necessary to fill time or measurement until the following short note. One then does not use double nor of triple not. This highlights the fact that the notation of the music and in particular of the rate/rhythm is not conceived at the origin like a succession of notes, but like a succession of rythmico-melody figures including/understanding each one one or more notes (see neumes).

  • One should not confuse the point of prolongation - always placed after a figure - with the point indicating the staccato passage - which him, is above or below a figure note.

  • When the point follows a figure of note, it must be analyzed like one duration being added with the preceding value by means of a Liaison with prolongation.

Not

Placé after a figure, the not increases this one of half of its duration.

  • Equivalence of the pointed values:

  • By what precedes we can deduce that any pointed value is worth the double of the lower pointed value, and half of the higher pointed value.

  • Relative value of the figures of pointed notes:

  • Relative value of the figures of pointed silences:

Double dot

Placé after a figure, the double dot increases this one of the three quarters of its duration.

  • Equivalence of the doubly pointed values:

  • As one saw it, the second point is with the first what first is with the initial figure: the equivalent of half of the value which precedes.

Triple not

Always according to the same principle, placed after a figure, the triple not increases this one of the seven eighth of its value. It should be noted that triple not is used very little.
