Nigelle
The nigelles are annual herbaceous plants with the finely cut out foliage of the family of the Renonculacées, pertaining to the kind Nigella (of Latin “ nigella ” itself of “ black Niger ” meaning in reference to the color of seeds of the species of this kind). There is a score of species, all originating in Eurasia.
Principal species
- Nigella sativa : the Nigelle cultivated or black cumin: it is a spice, used out of seeds, only in minor amount, because if not slightly poison.
- Nigella damascena : the Nigelle of Damas: it is a cultivated flower, toxic.
- Nigella arvensis : the Nigelle of the fields: it is a flower which one formerly found in the culture of the Blé and which posed problems with the farmers, because its large seeds are toxic and separate with difficulty from the grains of corn, but it has a role to play in ecological balance and the fight against the parasites of corn.
