Nicolas Artaud

Nicolas Louis Marie Artaud or Nicolas Artaud (born the December 6th 1794 with Paris - died the November 9th 1861 in the same city) was an academic and a French translator of the 19th century.

Biography

Nicolas Artaud was pupil of the Teacher training school, then professor in various royal colleges. It was suspended in 1824 to have written in newspapers of opposition. After the Revolution of July, he became inspector of Academy, then general inspector, and died vice-rector of the Académie of Paris.

One owes him of the translations estimated in his time of Sophocle, of Euripide, Aristophane and the Fragments to be used for the history of the ancient comedy (posthumous, 1863).
