Biography

From 1977 to 1980, Ian Curtis, Sumner, Hook and Morris forms the post-punk group " Joy Division" , after being themselves initially called Warsaw, in homage to a song of David Bowie present on the Low album.

After the death of Curtis in May 1980, the group decides to be formed again, choosing finally Bernard Sumner, guitarist, as singer. During October, the boyfriend of Morris, Gilian Gilbert, joined it. The first songs are in the line line of Joy Division: dark and melody. The last titles written by Joy Division (Ceremony, In has Lonely Place) besides will leave under the name of New Order. Martin Hannett, producer appointed of Joy Division, also produces the first album of the group entitled “Movement" (1981).

The music of New Order will take then an electronic turn, marked more and more with the wire of time, (even if the influence of a group as Kraftwerk is already present at Joy Division), then dance also, with titles like “Everything' S Gone Green”, “Temptation”, or “Blue Monday” (1983), which becomes the best sale maximum 45 turns of all times, or “Confusion” (1983), which is by-product by Arthur Baker. In France, the title " Confusion" is then selected like credits of the program musical Rockline , specialized in New wave English and introduced by Bernard Lenoir within the framework of the emission of Saturday evening the Children of the rock'n'roll of the French television channel Antenne 2 (current France 2) and allowed the French public to better know this group.

They besides largely will finance the Hacienda: nightclub of the label Factory (their label since the period Joy Division), which opens in May 1982.

The album “Power, Corruption & Lies” are born in 1983, followed by “Low-Life” in 1985, and “Brotherhood” in 1986. These three albums reflect well the sound of this group, sometimes very “dance”, sometimes more directed " rock'n'roll indépendant".

“Substance” is their first compilation. She is born in 1987. This double album gathers the majority of individual group, including “True Faith”, which is their individual last whole of the moment.

New album entitled “Technical” in 1989, this one at the head places charts at its exit.

In 1990, the group records “World in Motion” at the time of the football world cup, an anthem intended to support the English team… new success.

At this period, the group, crosses a difficult passage between internal tensions (personal) and external: ultimate attempt to save Factory (their label, directed by Tony Wilson) while signing with the label London Records, in 1992, in order to organize its distribution. Temporary closing of Hacienda, following violences within the nightclub (before permanent closure).

New Order is found finally to produce the album " Republic" (envisaged at the beginning for the label Factory) which leaves to Warner in 1993. Individual “the Regret”, becomes the title best classified group in the USA. The members of New Order are then engaged in other musical experiments:

Barney joins the ex-guitarist of The Smiths Johnny Marr to form Electronic (in which also Holding Neil of the “Fart Shop Boys takes part”, or Karl Bartos of “Kraftwerk”). He also works with “Chemical Brothers”.

Peter Hook launches the groups “Revenge” and “Monaco”, and more recently another project entitled " Freebass" (at the end of 2005).

The couple Stephen and Gillian founds the good named “The Other Two”…

In 2001 a new album, entitled “Get Ready”, is born (in which Billy Corgan, the ex-leader of the Smashing Pumpkins takes part). The group sets out again in round, but without Gillian Gilbert of which one of the girls is seriously sick. Her husband for its part continues to ensure his role of beater whereas Phil Cunningham replaces Gillian within the group. The same year the group signs the original soundtrack of the film Buffalo Soldiers under the direction of the type-setter David Holmes.

In 2005 the group leaves a new album entitled “Waiting For The Sirens Call”. New compilation also of its individual titles entitled… “The Individual”. The group starts again to occur on scene and takes again its old repertory of the period Joy Division in way more marked.

New Order and Joy Division also entered the U.K. Hall off Famed, after New Order gained “Godlike Genuises” of the NME for 2005.

Film based on the life of Ian Curtis, entitled “Control” (realized by Anton Corbijn) is the occasion for New order to take part in the music of film, taking again in particular some titles of Joy Division. Anton Corbijn had already worked with them, since it had signed famous the video of the song " Atmosphere" of Joy Division.

Esthetics

New Order, like the majority of the groups of the label Factory, frequently had recourse to the design minimalist of Peter Saville: small pocket not indicating the name of the group, or even the title of the album. This esthetics evolved/moved with their change of label, but the participation of Peter Saville remains regular. The group has also the reputation to give only few interviews, not always rightly, which reinforces this image of a group which inevitably does not play the game of media promotion.

The bass player Peter Hook, contributes to the sound of New Order by his play basic very characteristic, often enough “acute”, melody rather than rhythmic. The beater Stephen Morris mixes batteries acoustics and electronics briskly. Bernard Sumner writes the texts… Each one, for what one knows contributes to the writing of the songs.
