New Haven

New Haven is a city of the south-center of the State of the Connecticut, with the E. - U.. With 124.791 inhabitants, it is the second plus big city of the State. The Université Yale is located at the center town.

Geography

According to the Office of the census of the United States, the city extends on a surface from 52.4 Square kilometer]). The ground represents 48.8 km ² and water represents 3.6 km ². New Haven is crossed by the river Quinnipiac, and is located on a natural port formed by the fjord of the Long Island Sound. The metropolitan zone of New Haven counts approximately 500.000 inhabitants, and the city is in the center of the Comté of New Haven. It is called “the city of the elms” .

History

New Haven was founded in 1638 by the Puritains English under the control of the reverend John Davenport and negotiating it Theophilus Eaton. The first known inhabitants of the area of New Haven were the Amerindian Quinnipiack S (Indian term meaning “the people of the men of the country of the long water”). The colonists signed a treaty of alliance with Quinnipiacks and the relations between the two groups were friendly.

In 1640, the city became the capital of the Colonie of New Haven. The city developed slowly, and after a disaster in 1646 when a boat of local goods was lost at sea, New Haven was exceeded by Boston and New Amsterdam, was become New York since, like important urban center.

During the War of American independence, New Haven was occupied by British soldiers. However, they did not destroy the city as they had made with many of other cities of Connecticut which they had taken.

At the 18th century, the city became an industrial center. Éli Whitney invented the cotton gin there, and Samuel Colt designed the first automatic revolver there.

Culture

There are many theaters with New Haven, of which largest are the Long Wharf Theater, the Shubert Performing Arts Center and the Yale Repertory Theater.

New Haven is also known for its tradition of Pizza S: the vicinity of Wooster Square has a certain number of Italian restaurants which are famous for their pizza pies. This tradition comes from the strong Italian immigration at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century.
