New Hampshire

The New Hampshire is a State the North-East of the the United States, bordered in the west by the Vermont, in north by the Canadian province of the Quebec, in the east by the Maine and the Atlantic Ocean and in the south by the Massachusetts.

History

In 1623, two groups of English colonists, sent by the captain John Mason, are established in current New Hampshire, on the estuary of the Piscataqua River. In 1638, John Wheelwright, exiled of Boston founds a village called Exeter. In 1639, the colonists obtain a Charte (" Compact Exeter ") just like had done it before them the fathers pilgrims of New Plymouth. New Hampshire remains under the influence of the colony of the Massachusetts before becoming a royal province in 1679 - 1698. In 1719, colonists of origins Scottish and Irish unload in the area. In 1741, New Hampshire becomes again independent and managed by the governor Benning Wentworth.

New Hampshire was the first State to declare independent of Great Britain in 1774. Near to the Quebec, more of the quarter of its population has French or Franco-Canadian roots, the strongest rate among the American States.

Geography

Of a surface of 24  033 km ², New Hampshire are populated of 1  235  786 inhabitants (2000). The majority of the population live in the southern area of l´état, towards the border of the Massachusetts.

The capital of New Hampshire is Concord. Nevertheless, the two principal cities are Manchester and Nashua.

New Hampshire is of republican tradition and with the reputation to be the State more Conservateur of the New England.

Nevertheless, the vote of the voters of New Hampshire often differs from one election to another.

For the presidential elections, the voters of New Hampshire chose George W. Bush in 2000 by six thousand votes in advance but in 2004 preferred to him John Kerry by nine thousand votes in advance. New Hampshire was the only State to rock towards the democratic S at the time of these elections.

In 2002, New Hampshire chose for the post of governor, Craig Benson of the Republican party and in 2004, returned it in its hearths by electing John Lynch Democratic party

The two rooms of the State are traditionally mainly acquired with the republicans but they have both rocked on the democratic side at the time of the elections of November 2006. Thus, at the time of the legislature 2007 - 2008, the assembly is divided between 239 democrats and 161 republicans whereas the Senate distributed is entered 14 Democratic senators and 10 republicans.

On the federal scene, the two senators with the Congress are the republicans John E. Sununu and Judd Gregg whereas since 2007, the two elected officials of the State to the room of the representatives are members of the democratic party.

New Hampshire is the state which was selected to launch the Free State Project.

It is also one of the rare States of the New England to authorize the Capital punishment in its legislation, although it was not applied there since 1976.

Economy

Tourism is now the second sector in the economy.

Culture

French-speaking minority

After the English, the second language of the State is the French, which is spoken particularly in north, close to the Québécois border . In the county of Coos, more than 16% of the population French at the house speaks, according to the census of 2000.
