Nevers

Name

The name of Nevers east derived from that of the Nievre. It is documented in the forms: Nevirnum , Ebirno , Neberno , Nevernis … of old * a Néuar-ino- . One - S replaced - N of origin.

Jules César gave him the Gallic name of Noviodunum “new fortified town”.

Geography

The city is located at the confluences of the Nievre (affluent of the Loire), Allier (affluent of the Loire) and of the the Loire. To see, the panorama of the nozzle To combine. History

Capital of the hereditary county of Nevers in 992, the city strengthens under the influence of Pierre de Courtenay in 1194. The city belonged to the families of Courtenay successively, of Bourbon, at the houses of Flandres, Burgundy, Clèves and Gonzague.
the county was transformed into duchy in 1538 and was bought by Mazarin for its nephew Mancini in 1659.

Economy

Nevers owes with Louis IV of Nevers his famous activity of faience manufacture. Towards the end of the 16th century, it makes come from Italy Augustin Conrade, potter of Albissola, close to Savone, and his/her brothers, Baptiste and Dominique whom it installs with the castle of the Marsh with Gimouille. Tourist monuments and places

Nevers is classified town of art and history. The town of Nevers or quoted of the Dukes , belongs to the federation of the sites Clunisiens, crossroads of a religious current and important Monastique, the Châsse of Holy Bernadette (of Bernadette Soubirous) is one of the most remarkable testimonys.
