Negro Léopold

Léopold Nègre is doctor of natural medicine and doctor science. It was born with Montpellier, the June 15th 1879.

His/her father, Léopold Negro, Pasteur of the reformed Church, dies before its birth.

He marries Suzanne Charon, grand-daughter of Pasteur John Bost, the couple has 4 children.

  • in 1910, he is chief of the laboratory of the microbial analyzes of the Pasteur Institute of Algiers

  • in 1919, it joined the team of the laboratory of the Tuberculose of the Institut Pasteur of Paris directed by Albert Calmette where it takes part in research on BCG and in particular with its application. He develops the first technique of vaccination.

It defends the BCG when it is attacked in Germany. In 1929 the drama of Lübeck bursts: 71 children died after being vaccinated. It shows whereas it is about a manufacturing defect (the vaccine manufactured on the spot was accidentally contaminated) which does not blame the BCG itself.

With Alfred Boquet, it develops, before the discovery of antibiotics, a treatment of tuberculosis, the antigen methilic, whose role was to reinforce the immune system against tuberculosis

  • in 1950, he becomes President of the French company of tuberculosis

  • in 1951, it is elected member of the Académie of Medicine

He dies in Paris on July 29th 1961, he is buried with Nocé (Orne).
