Neal Adams is a draftsman of Comic S American born the June 6th 1941, known for its stories of Super-héros and his very natural style of illustration.

He studied at the school of the industrial arts of New York, where he took down his license at 18 years. For its final examination, Neal Adams presented 110 drawings whereas it was to show 10 of them.

Its greater period of glory and influence in the trade goes from end of the year 1960 at the years 1970, with the characters of Deadman, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, the X-Men and - most famous - Batman. His/her most famous collaborator is the scenario writer Dennis O' Neil, who wrote remarkable stories, replongeant in the obscure nature of Batman, and which tried out social comments in titles of Green Lantern.

During the years 1970, Adams carried out mainly illustrations for covers of publications and worked for the Cinéma. With the beginning of the year 1980, with the boom of the independent comics, he worked for Pacific Comics and some other editors. Later, it launched its own publisher, Continuity Close, with other illustrators who in their majority imitated the style of their owner.

Years cd.

  • 1967 : Neal Adams is engaged by cd. Comics and is seen entrusting the drawing of the adventures of Deadman, published in the magazine Strange Adventures.

Adams quickly becomes the new feeling in the small world of the comics, from its manner of drawing, very realistic, like its direction of the page layout, both particularly innovative for the time. Deadman not having known that only one adventure before the arrival of Adams, this last fact quickly his this character, taking part in the scenarios and signing even those of the last numbers.
  • 1968 : Written Adams and draws 4 consecutive numbers of the series The Specter which has just been started again, two numbers of World' S Finest Comics (cartoon presenting the common adventures of Superman and Batman), and especially is seen entrusting the title The Brave and The Bold, in which with each number Batman makes team with a different hero.

Neal Adams makes by the means of its drawings some modifications to the character of the man bat by lengthening the points of its mask as its cape, but also by utilizing it only night. During these adventures, Batman will be seen associated with Deadman (by twice), the Creeper, Flash, Aquaman, the Teen Titans, Sgt. Rock'n'roll like Green Arrow, to which Adams gives a new look (a goatee and a re-examined and corrected costume).
  • 1969: The adventures of Deadman end at the beginning of year, all at least in the pages of Strange Adventures.

Neal Adams written and draws 3 numbers of Teen Titans, and towards the end of the year ceases contributing to The Brave and the Bold (it will return there however in 1971 at the time of the #93), a review which for many readers is " only in which one finds true Batman". Vis-a-vis the popularity whose the character under the pencil enjoys this draftsman wonder, Adams is seen soon entrusting the title Detective Comics, one of the two principal magazines exclusively devoted to the man bat (the second being " Batman").
  • 1970 : Associated to the scenario writer Denny O' Neil, Neal Adams undertakes via Detective Comics to reinvent the character of Batman… by operating a return to the sources. The dispenser of justice of the night is again a character treated with serious, far from the caricatural version of the television series with Adam West who had to end up fading on the version paper of the character (itself already in freefall since many years in spite of an attempt to give the character on the " right chemin" in 1964); Batman finds its original blackness and becomes again a detective, operating only night, as a recluse (Robin will come nevertheless to give a knack here or there) and evolving/moving in a world altogether rather realistic, though its adventures will be sometimes tinted of a point of fantastic/terror.

Adams and O' Neil thus pose the bases of the modern version of the character whom we know today, their joint work remaining one of the absolute references relating to Batman.

Man-Beats, created by Adams, will make its first appearances in 3 stories written for the occasion by Frank Robbins.

The same year the duet O' Neil/Adams is requested to take in hand a title whose sales do not cease declining: Green Lantern . This last is found thus associated with Green Arrow and will be confronted with problems quite different from those to which it was accustomed to facing: those of the world in which the reader evolves/moves and to which it had never really paid attention. Thus during their adventures the two heroes coldly associated will sail in adventures treating of drugs, racism, the pollution or even of the sects.

Finally Neal Adams written and draws this same year three short stories putting in Deadman scene, which will be published in the pages of the Aquaman magazine.

  • 1971 : Neal Adams ceases drawing Detective Comics and unloads on the Batman magazine (for which it had already carried out a short history the previous year), always collaborating with Denny O' Neil. This last created Ra' S Al Ghul, which will have to become one of the most famous adversaries of the man bat.

The character of Two-Face (Two-sided) made his great return after 17 years of absence, and the Joker cease finally to be only one quasi-inoffensive buffoon to become again the dangerous psychopathe of the beginnings. General opinion, the run of Neal Adams on this title constitutes its greater success concerning the adventures of Batman.
  • 1972 : In spite of a great critical success and many rewards since the arrival of the duet O' Neil/Adams on the title, Green Lantern (retitré since " Green Lantern Co-starring Greeen Arrow") stop with number 89, due to insufficient sales. O' Neil and Adams will continue nevertheless the common adventures of the two heroes the space of a few months in the pages of the Flash magazine.

Neal Adams, which since its beginnings with cd. comics drew each month of many covers, is done from now on much rarer, only signing - with some exceptions close the covers of comics whose it draws also the interior pages (them also less and less many starting from second half of this year).

  • 1974 : Neal Adams draws its last number of the Batman magazine, and thereafter its work for cd. will be summarized primarily with some covers or pinups, or even of the illustrations for various licensed products cd. (puzzles, books discs, figurines, etc).

  • 1978 : Superman Vs Muhamad Ali; a data base of 72 pages drawn by Adams and partly written by him following the disaffection of the scenario writer Denny O' Neil. It will have been necessary for the artist nearly 2 years to conclude this project.

The Marvel years

  • 1969: on the councils of its friend Jim Steranko, Neal Adams goes to the offices Marvel Comics in order to meet Stan Lee there. This last, eager to carry out a beautiful blow by discharging the young draftsman, proposes to him to work on the title of its choice; Adams finally leans for X-Men , then a title in very great lose speed and to which cancellation is close. By preferring a title of second zone, it secures a greater artistic freedom thus.

Although it is not credited, it works out the scenarios in company of Roy Thomas and thus carries out 9 numbers, considered as belonging to most important and the most succeeded of the first team of X-Men at the sides of those carried out by the duet Stan Lee/Jack Kirby. Adams has made return the Sentinelles, Magnéto, as well as the Professor Xavier - supposed died for soon two years. It creates also Havok, Sauron, and the mutants of the Wild Ground.

  • 1970 : Adams draws two numbers of Thor, written by Stan Lee.

  • 1971 : Adams draws 4 short stories of the Inhumains which are published in the pages of Amazing Adventures , but especially is seen entrusting a few months later the title Avengers ( the Avengers ), where it finds Roy Thomas with the scenario and Tom Palmer with inking - just like on X-Men . But this collaboration short turns after only 4 numbers (of number 93 with number 96) following the decision of Thomas to call upon John Buscema to draw the number 97. Probably it is the difficulty of Adams of returning its pages in time which led the scenario writer to make this decision (already in the number 94 John Buscema had been called with the rescue to draw ten pages, and number 93 had left with one month delay). Although short, the contribution of Neal Adams to the Avengers also remains it in the memories, its numbers fitting in the story arc of the war opposing the Skrull S to the Kree, which is regarded as one of most important the sagas of all the career of these supermen.

  • During the following years, Adams will not work any more but occasionally for Marvel, signing mainly 2 stories of Conan and one of Dracula, like various covers, before leaving to found its own company, Continuity.
