Navigo passes

Navigo is the name of the smart card without contact containing the transport documents usable in Ile-de-France for the access to the networks the RATP, the SNCF and Optile.

Its implementation is supervised by the Syndicat of transport of Ile-de-France (STIF) which is owner of mark NAVIGO.

History

The Navigo master key was born into 1994 from a partnership between the RATP and the Group Innovatron (property of Roland Moreno, known to be the father of the Smart card). The development of this new badge gave place to the deposit of several patents in the field of technology " without contact".

Thereafter, the RATP continued itself the development of this badge. The Innovatron Group, as for him, markets for the interested companies the licenses of use of technology " without contact" developed for Navigo.

The first users to have profited from the Navigo master key are the carriers of charts Intégrale as from 2001. They were followed by the students having the chart Imagine' R in 2002, then in 2003 by the subscribers Imagine' R school.

In 2004 an experimentation of the transport ticket on Navigo master key was carried out in the 12th district of Paris.

In February 2005, they are the whole of Parisian and the inhabitants of outskirts of the city, zones 1 and 2, subscribed with the Transport ticket which are seen proposing passes it without Navigo contact.

In 2006, it is not distributed any more magnetic coupons to the users having a Navigo master key and mid-May 2006, it is with the turn of all Franciliens, some are their zones, to be able to have their subscription Transport ticket on Navigo master key.

The number of Navigo master keys on orange charts should quickly increase with the progressive disappearance of the orange charts on magnetic tickets.

In July 2007, passes it Navigo becomes compatible with the system of hiring of bicycle of the town of Paris, Vélib'.

In September 2007, the STIF introduced a new version of the Master key Navigo, the Master key Navigo Découverte. This new version gives from now on access has Navigo with the whole of the users not franciliens.

Type of master keys available

Traditional Navigo passes

The traditional Navigo master key is a master key free, reserved with the people residing or working in Ile-de-France. This master key is sent to residence after request near a counter, of a tradesman approved or by Internet on the site navigo.fr. This master key is personal and present the photograph of the subscriber. Navigo Découverte passes

Introduced in September 2007, Navigo Découverte passes it is a Navigo master key accessible to all the travellers, franciliens or not. This master key makes it possible to charge with the subscriptions short duration Transport ticket monthly or weekly. One ten years lifespan, Navigo Découverte spends it is on sale in the counters of the conveyers of Ile de France at the price of 5€ (price at the 9/1/07). Available without formalities, it is provided with:

a personal chart transport similar to that accompanying the traditional coupon by the Transport ticket
the smart card Navigo
a rigid case

Although this master key is anonymous, it is however requested from the user to affix his name, first name and photograph on the personal chart in order to be able to identify it during controls on the network. Because of the absence of file counting the holders of this master key, it is, as for the Transport ticket, impossible to justify purchase of a fixed price. The master keys Navigo Découverte thus neither are refunded, nor replaced in the event of loss or of vol.

Navigo Imagine' R passes

Held to the students subscribers to one subscription to the Chart Imagine' R, Navigo Imagine' R passes it can contain only the yearly subscriptions Imagine' R. It is characterized by a specific design with clouds, clean with the graphic Charte of the subscription Imagine' R. This master key is personal and present the photograph of the subscriber.

This subscription is advantageous of share its price to the young people but also by the fact that it is " dézoné" the Weekends, Bank holidays and School vacations of the zone C. the dézonage corresponds to the pure suppression and simple of the 6 tariff zones for this transport document and thus an access unlimited to all the network in Paris and in Ile-de-France.

Navigo Intégrale passes

Held to the subscribers to one subscription to the Integral Chart, Navigo Intégrale passes it can contain only the yearly subscriptions Intégrale. It is also characterized him by a specific design. This master key is personal and present the photograph of the subscriber.

Adoption by the users

In June 2007, nearly 250.000 people charged an Orange fixed price on a master key Navigo, that is equivalent thus to less than half of the emitted charts.

Operation

The radiotransmission of information of the subscription of the user at the boundaries of control makes it possible to save time and to increase the fluidity of passage to the valideurs. The passage is nearly 4 times faster than with a magnetic coupon.

To be validated, it master key must be approximate readers. Its antenna makes it possible to carry out this operation even if it master key is locked up in a bag or the pocket of a jacket. The controllers lay out electronic readers to read the contents of the chart during unexpected controls. These readers indicate the zones, the validity dates to them of the subscription, the 3 last validations or operations carried out on the master key and during 2008, the presence of Right Solidarity Transport (CST).

The master keys can be reloaded with the counters of the conveyers, on the automats sales outlets, as on the automats dedicated to Navigo in deployment since 2005. 1500 trade of proximity have also readers to reload the master keys. Certain banks also propose to reload passes it Navigo on their automatic teller machines.

Technical data

The Navigo master key is a master key without contact which rests on the association of two technologies:

the microprocessor card, already present on all the French bank cards;
radio transmission of the data by chip RFID.

The Navigo master key comprises a chip which contains all the relative informations with the subscription, like its relative informations with the carrier. It also contains an antenna which communicates with the validor.

The technology used for Navigo bears the name of Calypso. It is about a standard, in conformity with the ISO standards, of electronic ticketting developed within the framework of the European project Calypso and which gathered at the origin of the operators of Italian transport, Portuguese, Belgian and French.

However, the patents covering Calypso technology belong to the RATP, the SNCF and Innovatron.

An association with nonlucrative goal, Calypso Networks Association, gathering customers of Calypso and industrialists, was created. This association was given for aim of protection the standard of a possible industrial monopoly, to promote technology near the whole of the operators of transport in the world and finally to propose a label of certification. Evolutions
