National park of Harz

The National park of Harz is a National park located in Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt in Germany. It includes a vast surface of the Western part of the mountains Harz and extends from Herzberg to the southern point from the mountains until Bad Harzburg on the septentrional slopes, for an total surface area of 247 km ².

The park such as there currently exists was created in 2006 by the meeting of the National park of Harz in Lower Saxony (created in 1994) with the National park of Haut-Harz in Saxony-Anhalt (created in 1990). It includes parts of the districts of Goslar, Osterode and Wernigerode. Altitude lies between 230 and 1141,1 m (the culminating point, the Brocken). 95% of the surface are covered with forests, primarily of conifers.

The park accommodates rare animals like the cinclus, the black Cigogne, the Peregrine falcon and especially the Lynx of Eurasia. The latter had locally disappeared from the mounts of Harz at the beginning of the 19th century, and it is only in 1999 and thanks to project of reintroduction that it could regain this part of so territory.
