National Historic Landmark

For the articles treating of this subject in other countries, to see Historic building

Designation National Historic Landmark is decreed with buildings, districts, sites, structures and objects of the United States of America which are recognized like historical monuments or places according to the following criteria:
  • places where national historical events
  • places occurred where lived or worked of the famous characters
  • incarnations of ideals which gave form to the nation
  • constructions or a remarkable design
  • sites which characterize a certain lifestyle
  • or archeological sites rich in information.

More half of the historic buildings are held by individuals. In 2003, less than 2500 sites obtained this distinction. Working with the citizens, the program of the National Historic Landmarks draws up its projects under the expertise on the National Park Service which is in responsibility of name the new monuments and to maintain the existing historic buildings.

There exists also an association, the National Historic Landmark Stewards Association , which works to preserve, protect and promote these historic buildings.
