Narnia is a imaginary Monde created by the author Irish Clive Staples Lewis in which a series of seven is held Romance S fantastic: Le Monde de Narnia .

In the universe of Narnia, the animals speak, the mythical animals abound and the magic is current. The series follows the history of Narnia, since its creation until its end, and more particularly the visits of groups of children of our world.

Although as not built as the world of the Lord of the rings, that of Narnia is very complete and builds itself with the wire of the seven books (supplemented by film of Walt Disney).

Just like Tolkien, Lewis uses the traditional mythical creatures and reorganizes them in order to build Narnia. Whereas Tolkien takes only some myths and creatures which it restructures, Lewis takes all and leaves a little in bulk it. Nevertheless, certain narniesques elements purely remain. The books of Lewis are more clearly directed towards the children than those of Tolkien, and the character-high-speed motorboat are children, the adults are often shown like beings dubitative, unable to believe in the magic, and too ground-with-ground. It is besides one of the principal reproaches addressed to the character of Susan at the end of the last book. The adults introduced under one day positive are rather rare in the account. We can draw a mini encyclopedia from it.

History of Narnia

At the beginning, the world of Narnia was created by the Aslan lion, which, while singing, created trees, hills, rivers and other things essential with a world. He however added to the animals the gift of being able to speak. At the beginning, its people were only animals. But Digory Kirke, the hero of the first book, brought back two human (a carriage builder of our world and its Nellie wife). They became the first sovereigns of Narnia. All the human present in this world go down from them, and the already existing nymphs. They lived in the palate of Cair Paravel, which will be the royal palace during generations of kings.

But a few years only after its creation, Narnia was invaded by the white witch of the name of Formerly, girl of Lilith, first woman, who reigned during hundred years. Only the kingdom of Archenland, in the south of Narnia, and Calormen, from the south of Archenland, could escape the invasion. Many speaking creatures and other faunas lined up as regards white witch, because it seemed to them that no hope could arrive.

But one day, an young girl, Lucy Pevensie, arrived of our world, met a fauna, name of Mr. Tumnus. It realized that this world was badly, but of return in its world, his/her Peter brothers and Edmund as his Susan sister did not believe it… Until Edmund, also, arrives to him in Narnia, by the same means as his/her sister (in a magic closet). The Jadis queen succeeds in corrupting it, and incited it to bring his/her brothers and sisters to Narnia, because an antique prophecy said that " at the end of hundred years of reign of the witch, two wire of Adam and two daughters of Eve would save Narnia". After being itself allied in Aslan, the four children killed the witch. They reigned to four on Narnia, Peter as a supreme king. Their reign marked an incredible boom. But one day, mysteriously, while leaving to hunting, they disappeared, and returned on their premises.

After them, the line of the carriage builder went up on the throne, but at the end of some generations, it was the disaster: calormenes attacked them at the border of Archenland, the giants of north were done increasingly quarrelsome, and Telmarins, people come from the west, ends up invading them. Discreetly, the speaking animals disappeared, the magic creatures were erased, so much so that Narnia was not more populated than of human, and than the magic passed for a field of second plan. But 4 generations after the invasion telmarine was born a prince, prince Caspian, tenth of the name: he wanted to make reappear the golden age of the speaking animals and Aslan. One evening, while fuguant, he discovered that all the magic creatures were real, and that they had hidden in the forests. He then undertook a war against his uncle, king Miraz. But it realized that it would never arrive there without magic assistance. Using artefacts which had belonged to the four legendary kings, it made them return, to save Narnia. Guided by the dwarf Trompillon, the four kings and queens become again children, saved Narnia after a combat between Caspian and his/her uncle. Caspian reigned such its hero, and made rebuild the palate of Cair Paravel, which had been abandoned. Later, it was called " the navigateur" , because using Lucy, of Peter and their cousin Eustace Scrubb (very difficult to live and who will soften during the voyage), he travelled to the remote islands of the east.

But the problem of succession of Caspian X was ambiguous: although it had formerly a son, it lost it after one strolls in forest; while wanting to avenge his/her mother who had been bitten by a snake, Rilian, the son of Caspian, disappeared. Ten years after its disappearance (in years narniennes), Aslan called Eustace Scrubb and a girl of his class, Jill Pole, to find the prince while following major signs. They met in way Puddlegumm, a touille marsh (crossing between human and a frog) which will help them throughout the search. They knew that the prince was in the devastated grounds of north, with the country of the giants. After a short passage to Harfang, the manor of the " goods géants" (which wanted actually to devour them), they found the manor of the green witch, that which had removed the prince in the World-Underground. The prince was not aware of his condition; every evening, the witch attached it to a money throne, so that it did not take again conscience. But Eustace, Jill and Puddlegumm detached it, killed the witch, and left the hole so that it finds freedom. But of return to the palate of Cair Paravel, they make terrible discovered: king Caspian, party at sea to find his son, had died on a journey…

A few decades later, close to the cascade of the cauldron, a monkey, named lived Shift and which had as a servant an ass named Puzzlle. Shift was so old that he had seen the invasion telmarine whereas he was already an old man. But it was extremely malignant; he disguised Puzzlle in lion to make it pass for Aslan, history to control Narnia. The project succeeds, and many people obey the monkey, by taking it for the true king, because he knew Aslan. But true Aslan called all the children (except for Susan, which does not believe any more in Aslan nor in Narnia) which had helped it to save Narnia many and many times. They joined together all the creatures which did not believe in Shift, but this did not prevent Narnia from being destroyed; Peter, Lucy and Edmund had died in the derailment of a train. They found safety on the mountain of light of Narnia, “where each chapter is better than the precedent”.

Report/ratio of time

Created by Aslan, the world of Narnia is a world parallel with ours, but which does not contain the same creatures and which does not evolve/move pareillement. Time does not pass at the same speed in the world of Narnia as in our world. When Lucy between for the first time in Narnia, it spends the hours there, whereas on Earth, when it returns, it ran out no second. On the other hand, several days pass between the second and the third time that it goes back there, which seems to correspond about to passed time with Narnia. One can note similar occurrences in the other books, and conclude from it that the parallels of time between the Earth and Narnia are not linear.

Geography of Narnia

Narnia is centered on three principal places:

  • the Standard lamp (with the surroundings of which the Cupboard emerges). This standard lamp is here because of Formerly, the white witch, who launched a bar of standard lamp torn off on Earth, on the head of Aslan, during the birth of the world of Narnia. Thanks to the song of the Aslan lion a standard lamp pushed at the place or had fallen the bar. This standard lamp lights the wood of Narnia since the beginning of times of this world.

  • the Table of Pierre (on whom Aslan is sacrificed by the White witch),

  • Cair Paravel, the castle where the official kings and queens of Narnia reign.

Anecdotes

  • the name of the lion which created Narnia, Aslan (to pronounce “Aslane”) means “Turkish lion”. In the same way, it should be noted that in the original books, the " loukoums" what eats Edmund in the French version are called " Turkish Delights".
  • the author perhaps had the idea of the name " Narnia" while taking as a starting point that of an Italian small town which existed at the beginning of the Romain Empire.

  • the books were illustrated by Pauline Baynes, who was introduced to C.S. Lewis by J.R.R. Tolkien

  • the mice, which in the beginning were not gifted animals of word, have this honor which is granted to them after a demonstration of their love to Aslan, died on the Table of Pierre. Indeed, they corroded the cords which retained it with the table. Thus, one of the memorable characters is the mouse Ripitchip ( Reepicheep in English), which makes a point of going to the Earth of Aslan at the end of the world, in " the Voyage of the Frontier runner of Aurore".
