Napoleon (fish)
Of a length being able to reach 2,3 m and of a weight reaching 200 kg, the fish Napoleon ( Cheilinus undulatus ) is a giant of the seas attending the reefs of corals.
Distribution
This species lives in the oceans Indien and Pacifique, like in Red Sea. Napoleon can be observed in the coral reefs. The adults live in caves and other anfractuosities and are shown rather territorial. The young people live rather in the upper parts of the corals.
Biology and behavior
The Napoleon fish saw very a long time, at least 30 years. It reaches its sexual maturity towards the age of 5 or 7 years. One knows only little thing on the biology of this species. The females are able to change sex, but one is unaware of how. Thanks to their strong teeth, they are able to consume molluscs, Echinodermata and the crustacean ones.
Protection
In spite of their broad distribution, the populations of Napoleon seem declining. Taking into account the slowness of their development, the species is probably very sensitive to the fishing effort. There is a strong demand for its jaws which can be sold up to 40.000 €. Their flesh is also very appraisal in Southeast Asia. Since 2004, after several years of mobilization, the species is registered on the lists of the Convention on the international business of the species of fauna and flora savages threatened of extinction, which will allow a better control of its trade. The species was already protected locally, in particular in Australia, with the Filipino , the Maldives, Palau.
