Nakhodka

Nakhodka (in Russian: Находка) is a city and a port of the Krai de Primorsk, in the the Russian Far East . The city counts approximately 200.000 inhabitants. Of 1950 with 1991, when the large port close to Vladivostok was closed with the foreign visitors, Nakhodka was the most important deep water port of the Russian Far East.

Economy

The economy of the city, which revolves around the port (fishing and preserves), suffered since in 1991 Vladivostok was reopened in the world. Local industry also suffered when in 1998 the Rouble strongly devaluated after the Asian Crise. However, the future prospects are rather positive, Nakhodka was declared Free zone, and the federal government with Moscow as the regional government with Vladivostok endeavor to open the city with the foreign investors.

History

The Baie of Nakhodka, around which the city is organized, was discovered in 1859 by the Russian corvette Amerika , which sought a refuge during a storm. From where the name of Nakhodka which means in Russian " happy découverte". Before 1950, Nakhodka was a tiny fishing port, but all changed when the Soviet authorities decided to close Vladivostok with foreign navigation because it had become the base of the Soviet Flotte of the Pacific. Thus Nakhodka believed quickly. Many buildings date from the years 1950, built in particular by prisoners of war Japanese. The apogee of the city was reached in the years 1970 and 1980. It was used then as terminus with the Transsibérien.
