Nafissa Sid Cara

Nafissa Sid Cara , born the April 18th 1910 with Saint-Arnaud, close to Sétif, in one of the French departments of Algeria, and deceased on January 1st 2002, is a French political woman.

She was the first woman member of a government of the Fifth French Republic, and the first Moslem woman member of a French government (the following one will be Tokia Saïfi of 2002 with 2004) of 1959 with 1962.

Career

It is initially professor of letters, then is elected, the November 30th 1958, is appointed Algiers with the French National Assembly, it sits in the " group; Unit of République". In 1959, it becomes Secretary of State " responsible for the social questions in Algeria and the evolution of the personal status of right musulman" in the government of Michel Debré and in spite of several successive rehandlings until in 1962 will remain it.

General Inspecteure of the social affairs until in 1975, it becomes in 1979 member of the National Commission in charge of the study of the problems of the Moslem French, and the January 2nd 2001 commander in the order of the Légion of honor. She died on January 1st 2002.

His/her brother, Dr. Chérif Sid Cara (1902 - 1999) was parliamentary French, but so in favor declared Putsch of Algiers in 1961.
