My Beautiful Laundrette is a British film carried out by Stephen Frears, left in 1985. In the beginning orders for television, it will be judged enough interesting to leave to the cinema. The scenario is signed by Hanif Kureishi.

Synopsis

A young immigrant Pakistan board in England, Omar (Gordon Warnecke), seeks to exploit an automatic laundry, with the assistance of his uncle and of a friend of childhood, Johnny (Daniel Day-Lewis), which becomes his/her lover.

The film opens on the emptying of a squatt by the police force, posing from the start the matter. The authors treat at the same time social situation under the government Thatcher, of the Racisme and cultural diversity, as well as Homosexualité.

The characters are complex. Omar at the same time is attached to her ambitious family and, is interested and even revanchist: “ I am glad to see you washing my tiling! ” says it to Johnny which indeed ensures all the manual work of the shop. Johnny leaves its band of skins patriotic thanks to its love for Omar but also by desire to leave the galère in which it vegetates since always. The uncle of Omar, Nasser, carries out a traditional family life but has a white mistress, Rachel; he is of wilder in businesses and explains at the beginning in Omar how to collect the social securities. Sélim, cousin of Omar, second Nasser and round its incomes by a drug trafficking in which it tries to imply Omar; it receives a severe correction of the ex-friends of Johnny after having tried to crush one with its car of them, incivility whose consequences will be the confusion of the laundry. Tania, the cousin of Omar, wants to be modern (it gives nevertheless in sorcery) but tries to allure his/her cousin and even Johnny.
