Muriel, or the Time of a return is a Film French of Alain Resnais left in 1963.

Synopsis

September 1962. Helene Aughain, woman at the beginning of forty and antique dealer with residence, live with Boulogne-sur-Mer with Bernard Aughain, her son-in-law who returns from Algérie. It makes return its young love, Alphonse Noyard, a man dissimulator, charmer and skilful. It arrives accompanied by an young woman, Francoise, actress beginner, that it makes pass for his niece. Helene accommodates them and the cohabitation of the group will prove source of tensions: remanence of the past suitable for each one, resolution of passed and loves opposed.

" Muriel or the time of a retour" is one of rare films of Alain Resnais to the linear exposure: the feature film begins the evening from the Saturday, September 29, 1963 and is completed fifteen days later, on Sunday, October 14. This narrative process present is paradoxically the occasion to expose a past to sharp and traumatic for the characters: bombardments of Boulogne-sur-Mer for Helene and Bernard, last love of Helene and Alphonse broken by the war and the city itself marked by the rebuilding and the refusal of the past.

The traumatism of the War of Algeria for this generation is present, through the memory of Bernard who remains marked by the vision of Muriel, victim of torture.

While showing that the experiment of the war (for Bernard, the son-in-law of Helene Aughain) does not lead on a political commitment but to an intimate nightmare and an impossibility of communicating, Resnais goes in the middle of the problem.

Finished in June 1962, the war of Algeria remained a subject taboo in France: for Jean-Luc Godard ( the Small Soldier (1963), prohibited several years), it will be necessary to await end of the year 60 so that franker films, plus Nets, and indicters, signed by nonFrench scenario writers, appear, as the battle of Algiers of Gillo Pontecorvo (turned in 1966, prohibited until 1970) or the wind of Aurès of Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina.

Muriel not being a film on Algeria, but a film where it is question like awkward thought, Resnais by this subtle matter escaped the very fastidious censure from the time.
