Mugham

The mugham is a traditional and erudite musical genre of Azerbaïdjan which leaves a dominating place to the Improvisation. It associates the playing Chant with musicians of the traditional instruments of the country: the Tar (Lute with 11 cords), the Kamancheh (Violin with four cords) and the Daf (large tambourine). The mugham Azerbaijani division artistic characteristics of the Maqam Iraq IEN, of the Persian Radif and of the Turkish Makam . Since the independence of the country in 1991, one attends a revival of the mugham as well as a certain modernization (sound recordings) which puts in danger its impromptu character and the principle of its oral transmission. The mugham was classified " Masterpiece of the oral and immaterial Inheritance of humanity " by UNESCO, in a step which attempts to preserve the memory and the integrity of the artistic and cultural forms threatened.
