Mount-Trembling

Mount-Trembling is a city of the Quebec located in the regional Municipalité of county (MRC) of the Laurentides and the administrative area of the Laurentides.

Situation

It counts nearly 9000 inhabitants for a surface of 256 km ². The city was made up in 2000 at the end of a disputed project of fusion between the municipalities of Saint-Jovite, Saint-Jovite-Parish, Lake-Tremble-North and Mount-Tremble-Village.

History

The area was colonized at the beginning of the XIXe century by the priest Antoine Labelle who wanted to avoid the expansion Protesting E, it thus populates French Canadians all the areas of north. It indicates the site of the future villages according to the fertility of the grounds, the sources of water and the layout of the railway line which it projects to make build.

In 1892, the inhabitants of the municipalities which will constitute later the big city of Mount-Trembling are broken of their insulation by the railroad of the P' tit train of North. This railway line causes a tourist boom encouraged in 1938 by Joseph Bondurant Ryan, a young person and rich American of Philadelphia, come in north to make the prospection of Or, enthusiast of the beauty of the majestic mountain " esprits". It would have made its rise of the mountain, and returned at the top of this mountain of 968 meters, by seeing the unspoilable view on the landscape buried under the white coat of the winter, OJ Ryan would have liked to transform the wild field with the foot of the mountain into alpine village of international class. One year later, in February 1939, it opens the doors of its alpine village, Mount-Trembling it Lodge, whose architecture is inspired by the Vieux Quebec.

Formerly important stages of the railroad of the P' tit train of North, the constituent municipalities fell into a deep economic stagnation in the years 1980 following the fall from tourism and to closing from the railway line. The revival of the holiday resort Station Mount-Trembling with the beginning of the year 1990, which was then at the edge of closing, allowed an economic growth and demographic spectacular, more especially as the municipality collects important incomes rising from tourism.

Nowadays

Mount-trembling affirms itself now like a tourist city with several important centers of ski and many golf courses. Several projects are in the process of realization on the mountain of which the construction of a new tourist village on the slope Sun. The majority of the tourists come from Ontario and New England, but the city attracts more and more Europeans and the Asian ones.

In 2004, within the framework of the process of municipal défusions initiated by Jean Charest, the old municipality of Lake-Tremble-North expressed, by referendum, its desire not to belong more to Mount-Trembling. The other constituent municipalities rejected the idea.

In spite of this fulgurating economic growth, the citizens and the administration of the city wish food in harmony with nature and that the territory remains in its wild state.

Sport

  • Mount-Trembling left international anonymity by receiving two Grand Prix of Canada of Formule 1 in 1968 and 1970 on its circuit of the same name: Circuit Mount-Trembling.
  • Mount-Trembling is the host of a race of the championship Champ Because since 2007 on the Circuit Mount-Trembling.
