Mount-Thunder
The Mount-Thunder was old a French department, named according to the Donnersberg , culminating point of the solid mass of the Hardt.
History
Before the French conquest, Cisrhénanie was a mosaic of several tens of States, members of the Saint Germanic Roman Empire. Occupied starting from 1794, transitory a République cisrhénane was proclaimed on September 5th, 1797 (a République of Mainz had already been to it on March 18th, 1793, requiring its annexation of France the 21 and obtaining it the 30), but the area was divided the November 4th 1797 by the Directoire in four departments, the Roer, the the Saar, the Rhine-and-Moselle and the Mount-Thunder, which were organized the January 23rd 1798 (stopped of the 4 pluviôse year VI). These departments were officially integrated into the French territory the March 9th 1801 and existed until the dismantling of the Empire in 1814.André Jeanbon Saint Andre was prefect of Mount-Thunder from December 20th, 1801 to December 10th, 1813.
Mount-Thunder (district) is today the name of a district of the Land of the Rhineland-Palatinat (Rheinland-Pfalz) whose capital is Kirchheimbolanden.
Geography
The chief town of the Mount-Thunder was Mainz and its sub-prefectures Spire, Kaiserslautern and Deux-Ponts. It counted 342 316 inhabitants in 1809. The portable Gazetteer of the time pays: “The territory produces wines, corns, grains, fodder, vegetables, fruits, honey, hemp, flax, wax, game, fish; saltworks, forging mills, furnaces, foundries; cloth factories, silk trade, fabrics of cotton, fabrics, hats, hosiery, soap, tobacco; tawings, tanneries, laundries, paper mills, glassmakings, mills with oil; porcelain factories; wood of mature standing timber. There is cattle of beautiful species; 437.576 arpents of forests. Its capital is with 137 Lieue S of Paris.”-
