History

The first ten years of the Moulin-Rouge are connected in a swirl of more extravagant evenings the ones than the others: inspired by the circus, one finds attractions - of which those of the Pétomane, remained famous in annals… It is called “the first palate of the women” by its owners Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler.

Around the Cancan, one assembles the first reviews - that of Circassiens and Circassiennes in 1890. One organizes concerts balls there the every day at 10 p.m. One made there scandal with the Ball of Quat' z' Arts and its procession of Cléopâtre naked range by four males, surrounded young girls such stripped and faint on beds of flowers…

A beginning in brass band, which with orée of the next century, will lose its splendor. December 29th, 1902, the hour of the last ball sounded in the general indifference. The squares is not more with the mode, the ball of the Moulin-Rouge is transformed into theater-concert under the crook of its new director Paul-Louis Flers. A well-known revuist on the place of Paris and which wishes to make a place much more prestigious. It will remain with the head of the famous establishment… 9 months. Many directors will succeed to him what will not prevent the Moulin-Rouge from finding its cruising speed.

Under particularly picturesque pseudonyms and rather rabbles, the most famous dancers of the time compete, each one with their temperament, on the scene of the Moulin-Rouge. The uncontested figurehead of the French-cancan remains celebrates it Goulue and its gouaille inimitable. But it is not the only one to illustrate itself in the art of the cancan: one regularly finds on scene Jane April called Jeanne Insane the, the Môme Cheese called thus because of his young age, “Roasts sewer” known for his taste of the uproar, Nini Pattes in the Air which will open a school of Cancan or Yvette Guilbert, large national monologuist and imitatrice of Sarah Bernhardt… Seule outstanding male figure in this learned assembly of women: Boned Valentine the differently called the Man of Squares and who will have never his similar to make dance the girls…

Toulouse-Lautrec, faithful among the faithful ones, is the large witness of this period ostentation. Among the whole of its works, seventeen of them, of which certain famous in the whole world, are directly inspired by the Moulin-Rouge. It is one of the characters emblematic. Toulouse-Lautrec would undoubtedly not be what it is without the Moulin-Rouge and Goulue. In the same way, the would Music-Hall be today what it is without the talent of the painter?

As of 1850, Celestial Mogador, dancer high-speed motorboat of the Bal Mabille - which will become later the Mabille orchestra of the Moulin-Rouge - invents a new dance, the squares: eight minutes to cut the breath on perfect harmonies and with Offenbach as uncontested Master of music. A endiablé rate/rhythm, balance, flexibility, in extreme cases of acrobatics, the dancers of the Squares in their alluring costume, make lose the head with the All-Paris.

May 9th, 1983, a scandalous act occurs on the scene of the Moulin-Rouge.
