Morarji Desai

Indian politician (February 29th, 1896 - April 10th, 1995). It takes part in the movement of civil disobedience against the British and becomes an influential member of the Congrès within its state of the Gujerat. Minister Commercial and Industry in 1956, then Finances in 1958, it resigns in 1963, in accordance with the plan Kamaraj. Unfortunate candidate with the head of the government vis-a-vis Indira Gandhi with died of Lal Bahadur Shastri in January 1966, it becomes nevertheless the following year his Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance. Representative of the wing conservatice of the party of the Congress, it enters in conflict with Indira Gandhi which withdraws its wallet in July 1969 to him. At the time of the scission of the Congress, it forms with the old guard of the party the Congress (O) for Old or Organization and becomes one of the chiefs of the opposition. Re-elected appointed in 1971, it joined the protest movement of J.P. Narayan and is stopped at the time of the proclamation of the state of emergency in 1975 by Indira Gandhi. Slackened on January 18th, 1977, he is member with the Congress (O) of the coalition of Janata at the time of the return of the free elections. Prime Minister for the Indian Union from March 24th, 1977 to July 15th, 1979, it directs the first government not congressman of the history of India and succeeds Indira Gandhi after the end of the state of emergency. The dissensions within the new coalition gouvernenentale push it with the resignation.
