Mopti

Mopti is a city of the Mali located at 650 km of Bamako. It is the capital of the fifth administrative area of Mali.

Geography and population

Mopti is located at the confluence of the Niger and its affluent the Bani. It is called “Venice of Mali”. It is for this reason a frantic port where people and goods forward. It is also a large shipyard on the river where several factories of dugouts employent of many craftsmen.

Its population is approximately 115.000 inhabitants, various ethnos groups: bozos, Peuls, Songhaïs, Bambaras, Dogons, Marakas, Touaregs which cohabits peacefully as the film shows it the spirit of Mopti of Pascal Letellier and Moussa Ouane (1999).

History

The city was founded at the 19th century by bozos. It then bears the name of Sangha which means gathering place. In 1919, the town of Mopti is set up in mixed commune. It becomes common of average exercise in 1952.

Monuments and places

  • the large mosque of Mopti, called commonly Mosque of Komoguel , was built between 1933 and 1935 on the site of a preceding mosque set up in 1908. Being 31 meters long on 17 broad, it is built out of bricks and is covered with Banco. Its restoration began in 2004 thanks to the financing granted by the foundation Aga Khan for culture (AKTC). The restoration must finish in May 2006. The large mosque was registered with the inventory of the cultural goods of Mali of the ministry for the Culture on October 14th, 2004.
  • the port of Mopti is an important port on the Niger river, where men and goods forward. It is also the place of an important shipyard of dugouts and Norway pines. The Bozo bar located at the end of the port is a famous tourist place.

  • the market of Mopti is one of largest of the area, where farmers Dogon, fishing Bozos, Peuls stockbreeders come to sell harvests, fishings, and animals. The place particularly alive and is animated.
