Monterrey
Monterrey is a town of 1,1 million inhabitants located at the North-East of the Mexico, capital of the State of the Nuevo León. The metropolitan zone of Monterrey has 3,8 million inhabitants and covers 1,2% of the surface of the State, the larger and more important third in Mexico.
Economy
Monterrey, third city more important of the Mexico and capital of the State of the Nuevo León is a industrial Puissance. It is in particular known for its production of Bière, of Acier, Verre and Ciment - CEMEX is the third more important cement factory of the world behind Lafarge and Holcim and in front of Apasco since the acquisition of the British RMC. Among produced beers with Monterrey by the group FEMSA, let us quote: Carta Blanca, Tecate, Bohemia, Ground, Casta, Indio, XX (Back Equis), and Nochebuena. Vitro is one of the largest producers of Verre of North America. Monterrey is also important a Money market: the Banorte - (only large the Bank held by Mexicans) has its head office with Monterrey.Monterrey occupies a geostrategic position. Its proximity with the United States and its industrial power offer to the local companies an access to the North-American market with the production costs of a country in the process of development. This position attracts each year the overseas investments in the State de Nuevo Leon.
The informal economy remains very developed and represents an important source of income for the local population as for the remainder of Mexico. The minimum wage of approximately 4 euros per days (50 pesos) encourages this phenomenon.
Paid vacations are informellement more generous than the legal national minimum. This last with 7 days off height the first year worked at a rate of 2 days additional per annum.
History
Monterrey was founded three times:
- first once in 1577 under the name of Valle de Santa Lucía by the Portuguese priest Alberto del Canto.
- One second time in 1582 under the name of San Luis Rey de Francia by another Portuguese, Shine Carvajal there of Cueva, which was also the first true colonizer of the Nuevo León.
- third once the September 20th 1596 by Gift Diego de Montemayor, with the head of 12 families. It names the city Ciudad Metropolitana de Nuestra Señora de Monterrey (“metropolitan city of our lord of Monterrey”) in the honor of Don Gaspar de Zúñiga there Acevedo, count of Monterrey (Galicia), which was then Vice-roi of News-Spain.
The Armée with the United States invades the city (Bataille of Monterrey) in 1846 and until in 1848 occupied it. A few years later, the French invasion led to the come to power of the emperor Maximilien which did not control however all the territory. Benito Juárez which refused to be subjected to Maximilien, issued that Monterrey was the new capital; she played the part of capital of the April 3rd to the August 5th 1864.
Monterrey remained a city relatively little populated until the beginning of the 20th century. In 1905, the city counted only 80.000 inhabitants. In 1910, Antonio I. Villareal, military Gouverneur of the State, which was savage opposing to the clergy, ordered the closing of the temples and the destruction of the temple of Saint the Francois, oldest of the city. It destroyed also the colonial files. In 1988, the hurricane Gilbert caused many property damages and caused the death of tens of inhabitants.
Sports
The city counts two clubs of Football: Rayados and Tigers. The first play in the stage of the Instituto Tecnológico there of Estudios Superiores de Monterrey while the other plays in the stage of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. It has also a football team in room: Raza
Los Sultanas de Monterrey , a team of Baseball, has the greatest stage of Latin America for this sport.
Culture
The typical dishes are: the Machacado idiot huevo (omelet with the machaca: salted, desiccated, roasted red meat then crushed) and the Cabrito asado (roasted kid).
