The Montana is a State of the north of the the United States, bordered in the west by the Idaho, in north by the Canadian provinces of the Colombia-British, the Alberta and the Saskatchewan, in the east by the South Dakota and the North Dakota and in the south by the Wyoming.
History
On arrival of the European first , the area was populated by Amerindian S of which the Sioux, the Pierced-nose Indians, Kootenais, the Cheyennes or the Pieds-Noirs. Traversed by French trappers during the 18th century, it belonged to the territory of the Louisiana, then sold with it, in 1803, with the the United States. It was partly explored by the Expédition Lewis and Clark, in 1805 - 1806. The discovery of gold layers in the years 1850 - 1860 caused an massive immigration of prospectors and colonists. In 1864, Montana was set up in territory. In 1876, the Sioux of Sitting Bull caused the defeat of the general Custer at the time of the famous battle of Little Big Horn, in the south of Montana. Today, the site is the tourist main activity of the State. Montana integrated the Union the November 8th 1889, becoming the forty and unième American State. The mining extraction made, thereafter, the richness of the State.
Geography
Of a surface of 380 849 km ², Montana are populated of 908 780 inhabitants (2004), which makes some with the Alaska and the Wyoming one of the States of the United States having more the weak density of population (2,39 habitants/km ²).

A republican bastion at the time of the presidential elections
At the time of the presidential election of 2004, the president George W. Bush carried there 59,07% of the voices compared with 38,56% with the democratic candidate John Kerry.No democratic candidate carried the State since Bill Clinton in 1992, arrived at the head of the candidates with 37,63% of the voices compared with 35,12% at George H.W. Bush and 26,12% at populist of right-hand side, Ross Perot.
Otherwise, since the end of the Second world war, Montana always voted for the republican candidates except in 1948 (Harry Truman) and 1964 (Lyndon Johnson).
A State locally politically shared between the two parties
Since 2005, the governor of the State is the democrat Brian Schweitzer, elected with a republican fellow candidate, John Bohlinger, for the post of lieutenant-governor.
Three of the four other elected stations of the executive are held by democrats.
The legislature of Montana is controlled, with a very narrow margin, by the democrats. Thus, at the time of the legislature 2007 - 2008, the Lower House of 100 seats is dominated by a majority of 50 democrats against 49 republicans and 1 independent whereas the senate of 50 seats is him-also dominated of accuracy, by 26 democrats against 24 republicans.
At the federal level, at the time of the session 2007 - 2008, the state is represented with the Sénat of the United States by the democrats max Baucus and Jon Tester and with the Chambre of the representatives by the republican Denny Rehberg.
Economy
Montana presents a diversified economy. The mineral resources are considerable. The State has great coal and natural gas, oil, copper reserves (lignite). The other resources are gold, the money, the phosphates, zinc and manganese.
The agriculture, primarily practiced in the broad valleys of Rock relates to mainly the breeding, cereals, the fodder plants and sugar beet. The forestry development is a very important activity.
Industries rest especially on the treatment and the transformation of the agricultural and mineral raw materials.
Tourism is very active in the Rock ones. The most attended sites are the National Glacier Park, the historic site of the battle of Little Big Horn (1876), the vestiges of the Saint Mary' S Mission (1841) or Bannack State Monument, a phantom city. Important ski stations were created (Big Sky Ski Area, Red Lodge-Grizzly Peak).
Also, the national parks represent an important attraction for regional tourism. They are two in the State, the National Glacier Park, at the Canadian border, and a small portion of the National park of Yellowstone.
