Monrovia , capital of the Liberia, at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, with the mouth of the River Saint-Paul, on the Cape Mesurado.

History

Monrovia is founded in 1822, on the island Providence, by being used as refuge to the slaves freed from North America. It also accommodates bast populations of the interior of the grounds. It is called thus in the honor of the president of the United States James Monroe, after the founder presbytérien of association had named it Christopolis . A great number of former slaves settle there at the XIXe century. With the beginning of the year ninety, Monrovia is the Théâtre of many plunderings and great violences at the time the Civil war which follows the Assassinat of the bast leader Samuel K. Doe. Vis-a-vis the insecurity of the country in war, the most dangerous areas of the country were deserted with the profit from the Capitale whose population increased by 300.000 inhabitants in ten years.

Geography and economy

Monrovia extends on the island Bushrod and the Cape Mesurado.

It is more the big city, the main port and shopping mall of the Pays. She plays a great part in the economy of the country by ensuring the main part of exports of Iron ore. She produces mainly manufactured goods, in particular of the products agroalimentary, Pétrole refined, chemicals and pharmaceutical as well as construction materials.

Monrovia shelters the university of Liberia (1862) and the university Cuttington (1889), as well as the Capitole (1958) and the principal administrative monuments. However, because of the civil war which devastated the Pays, the city was mainly destroyed.
