Monks of the forest

The monks of the forest constitutes a tradition Thai Bouddhisme Theravada. It is about a school of austere Buddhism, centered on the practice of the meditation.

Origins

Characteristics

The monastic life takes in this school a very stripped form, pointing out some practical Zen, with which this tradition shares the refusal of intellectualization.

The practice of the meditation, including Samatha bhavana, is central. The Mantra buddho is also employed.

The respect of the Vinaya is essential, as well as the respect of the monks, in particular ordered for a long time. Certain monks practice the Jeûne, much one of the Dhutanga (average of purification).

The school of the forest thus shows very orthodoxe, entirely assuming specificities of the Theravada.
