The toponym Monein /mun éŋ/(cf Munein) is based on the radical mun- (Basque Munho “hill”) and the suffix aquitanic - eŋ . It is documented in the forms Moneng (1127), Moneing (1128), Monen (XIIe century), Munins (1154, Édrisi), Monenh (1215)), Feels-Girontz Monenth (1434), Monneinh and Mouneinh (1675).

History

Paul Raymond associated the town of Monein with the Aquitanian peule supposed Monesi . They are in fact a bad reading the name the Onesii (Pline the Young person, delivers IV) Bagnères-with-Luchon. It notes that Monein counted a laic abbey as of XIIe century, vassal of the Viscount of Béarn.
In 1385, Monein counted 414 fires. The Bailliage of Monein was composed of Cardesse, Cuqueron and Monein.
