Monastery of Visoki Dečani
The monastery of Visoki Dečani (in Serb Sr МанастирВисокиДечани/sr Manastir Visoki Dečani), or, more simply monastery of Dečani , is a orthodoxe monastery Serb located in the autonomous province of the Kosovo, to 12 km in the south of the town of Peć. Its cathedral is the largest medieval church of the Balkans and it preserves an important whole of Byzantine frescos .
In 2004, the monastery of Visoki Dečani was registered on the Liste of the world heritage of UNESCO and, in 2006, it was placed on the Liste of the world heritage in danger.
History
The monastery was rested by the king Stefan Uroš III Dečanski in 1327. The original charter of its foundation is gone back to 1330. With its death, in 1331, the king was buried there; so Dečani became a popular place of pilgrimage. The nickname of king Stefan, “Dečanski”, refers to the monastery of Dečani. The construction of the monastic unit continued under the reign of his/her son Stefan Uroš IV Dušan and was completed in 1335, but decoration lasted, as for it, until in 1350.
The cathedral
The cathedral, dedicated to the Christ Pantocrator is built in red and yellow blocks of marble pale. She was built at the time where the monk Franciscain Vitus of Kotor directed the monastery. She is distinguished from the other Serb churches of the same period by her imposing dimensions and the influence which she received from the Romanesque architecture. She also preserves a Iconostase of wood dating from the 14th century as well as the Sarcophage carved of king Stefan.
Frescos
The cathedral preserves a whole of approximately: 1000 portraits, representing the major topics of the New Testament.
