Mombasa
Mombasa is the second city and the main port of the Kenya. It is the capital of the Coast Province ; it is located in a bay of the Indian Ocean, with the southern limit of the country.
This city, with rapid growth, is used as port with the north-eastern areas of the Tanzania and with the Uganda, private of access to the sea.
Mombasa includes/understands the old city, located on an small island close to the littoral (16 km ²) and a more modern metropolitan zone which developed on the continent, connected to the old city by arranged fords, bridges and vats. The modern port, located in deep water of the west coast of the island, shelters important docks, shipyards, as well as oil and sugar refineries.
Its population is estimated at 900.000 inhabitants.
History
Mombasa was founded towards 750 by Arab tradesmen. In 1498, the explorer Portuguese Vasco de Gama unloads there. The Portuguese are Masters of the city in 1505 and gradually make of it a fortified town with commercial vocation, on the Route of the Indies. The Portuguese are definitively driven out in 1698 by the Omanis, combined with certain factions Swahili. In 1895, it was managed by the British and was until in 1907 the capital of the British Eastern Africa.It was indicated capital coastal protectorate of Kenya in 1920 and, in 1963, belonged to new Kenya.
