Moguilev
Moguilev is a town of Bielorussia (Belorusse: Магілёў; Russian: Могилёв, also is written Moghilev or Moguiliov) and the regional capital of the Région of Moguilev, near to the border with the Russia. In 2004, the city counted approximately 364.000 inhabitants, which makes of it the third plus big city of the country.
Geographical location
Moghilev, center administrative of the area, is located at the edge of the river Dniepr at 201 km of Minsk. It is a rail junction with the directions towards Orcha, Ossipovitchi, Jlobin, Kritchev and a city located at the crossings of the roads towards Minsk, Gomel, Vitebsk, Bobruisk. The municipality of Moghilev is subdivided in 3 administrative districts. The city has a river port and an airport which is a point of international transit of the passengers and goods.
History
The town of Moguilev (or Moghilev) was founded in 1297 by the will of a duke, Lev Danilovich Mogiy (from where the name of the city, according to the legend) which made build a castle on banks of Dniepr although it is not there any formal trace of this castle, which would have been destroyed by Polish in 1595. At the 14th century, Mogilev made party of the Grand-Duchy of the Lithuania. city started to develop at the 15th century. In 1592 (until in 1606) one granted Mogilev the small privilege of Magdeburg. The town hall was built on the place like symbol of autonomy and the free trade. In 1604, the population of the city rose with 15000 inhabitants, including 45% craftsmen. Moghilev was, by its central position in Europe, a ground of many combat, as at the time of the Guerre of north (1700-1721, Sweden - Russia). The city was also occupied by the troops Napoléonienne Frenchwoman in 1812 from August to November. During the Revolution of October, Moghilev initially was with the hands of the anti Bolsheviks before rocking and being reorganized by the red forces. At the time of the second world war, the combat for Mogilev was tended. The defense of the city had lasted during 23 days against Nazis.Des resistance movements one then assembled in the city, which was released the June 28th, 1944 under the ordering of Grishin and of Boldin.Moghilev was just with the Bielorussia after the war and thus remained under mode Communiste until the fall of last in 1989.
Monuments
The modern monuments to note are the commemorative Memorial in homage to the war victims in Loupolov, concentration camp Nazi, the monument paying homage to the combatants for the Soviet capacity in the area of Moghilev, the Memorial “Field of Bouinitchi”, place of the fierce combats against the invaders German in 1941.Moghilev is also one of the three only town of Bielorussia (with Brest and Misnk) to have an eternal flame for pointed out its resistance against the invader Nazi.
There is also in Moghilev the counterpart of the seat of the Belorusse government of Minsk. It was built between 1918 and 1921, at the time of Belorusse independence if Poland, then very near, invaded Minsk. It is today the prefecture of the régon of Moghilev.
