Mike Gartner

Michael Alfred Gartner (born the October 29th 1959 with Ottawa in Ontario) was a player of professional Hockey Canadian, playing station of right winger during 19 seasons in LNH with the Capitals of Washington, the North Stars of Minnesota, the Rangers of New York, the Maple Leafs of Toronto and the Coyotes of Phoenix. He also played a season in the Worldwide association of hockey with the Stingers of Cincinnati.

Career

Gartner was selected in first round, 4th on the whole by Capitals with the Repêchage of entry in the LNH 1979. It however began its professional path at Stingers from Cincinnati of the AMH in 1978-79 on a trio with Mark Messier and knew one good season, finishing 2nd (after Wayne Gretzky) for the honors of the Recruit of the year. The AMH ceasing its activities at the end of this season, Gartner joint in Capitals, with which it passes the major part of the 10 following campaigns.

He knew a solid season 1979-80, gaining the honors of Recruit of the year and Better player of year (MVP) of the Capes, in addition to being elected the most promising player by the supporteurs of the club, carrying out amongst other things the team with 36 goals. He passed to North Stars the March 7th 1989 with Larry Murphy in return of Dino Ciccarelli and Bob Rouse. He left Washington like better striker, frontier runner and pointer of the history of the team, and he is classified today 2nd in these three categories at the Capes.

Its stay with the Minnesota lasted only one season; it was yielded to Rangers the March 6th 1990 for Ulf Dahlén, a choice of fishing out and future considerations. He knew a strong beginning with New York, piling up 11 goals and 16 points during the 12 matches which remained to be played regular calendar. In 1991-92, he became the very first player of the history of the LNH to obtain its 500e goal, its 500e passes and its 1000e not during the same season. The following season, it became the Ranger first to mark 40 goals or more during 3 consecutive seasons. It marked even 4 times during the Match of Stars of the LNH, deserving the title of MVP.

In 1993-94, it was exchanged in Maple Leafs against Glenn Anderson, a player of the minor leagues and a choice with the fishing out. It remained with Toronto until in 1996, when it was exchanged with the Coyotes of Phoenix, which had just been relocated of Winnipeg. Gartner counted the very first goal and the very first turn of the hat of the history of the Coyotes the October 7th vis-a-vis the Bruins of Boston, with the 2nd match of the team. It spent two seasons with the Coyotes before drawing its reverence in August 1998.

In spite of an impressive career, Gartner was likely never to raise the Coupe Stanley nor to even play finally. Only Phil Housley disputed more matches that him (1432) without never gaining the Cut. He was certainly member of Rangers which went to gain the Cut in 1994, but he was sent to Toronto before the deadline of the transactions. In fact, it was 3 times exchanged in the neighborhoods of the fateful deadline, and each time, it made an immediate impact, because in 35 matches disputed with a new team following an exchange in semi-season, it obtained 24 goals, 18 master keys, 42 points and a differential of +16.

Gartner was recognized throughout its career for its consistency, holding the record of the league with 14 consecutive seasons of 30 goals or more; the curtailed season of 1994-95 was the only one with being able to finish this sequence, which could have been even longer, since during the two following seasons, it still reaches the plate of the 30 goals. He was only the 5th player to reach the course of the 700 goals, in spite of the fact that he never marked any more than 50 during one season. Since its totals were always good but never to exceed the best enough, it was never named within the First or Second Team of Stars of the league, nor did not gain a major trophy in the LNH.

He was established with the Temple of re-elected hockey in 2001, becoming the first established not to have never gained the Stanley Cut, to have played finally, gained a trophy or summer named on a Team of Stars of end of season, soft a revenche for a player who nevertheless will have known a brilliant career.
