Microsoft Windows Me
Windows Millenium Edition (sometimes shortened Me ) is a Operating system launched by Microsoft on September 14th, 2000. Entirely based on Windows 9x (Windows 98 for example), it was during family and multi-media of Windows compared to the professional version (Windows 2000 Professionnel).
However, it is as less reliable and much less stable as this one, which pushed Microsoft to be launched, on October 21st, 2001, Microsoft Windows XP, the first version of Windows based on the source code of Windows 2000.
Innovations
This successor of Windows 98 included/understood only minor changes compared to his elder.
Evolution of certain programs
Internet Explorer evolved to version 5.5. Windows was also delivered to Me with Windows Media Player 7 in order to compete with the competitor dominating of the time, Real Player, as well as a video editor who allowed some basic functions in an easy interface of access, named Movie Maker. Certain internal functions were improved. Thus the defragmentor of disc was seen becoming faster. Microsoft also added some esthetic keys like some secondary functions in order to bring it closer to Windows 2000.
Disappearance of the MS-DOS mode
One of the functions médiatisées in Windows was to Me the disappearance of the mode pure MS-DOS. This idea suggested that, contrary to Windows 95 or 98, Windows DOS did not charge Me before launching the Windows core. However, the change remained very full minor but of consequences. This access was simply restricted and that did not prevent certain old applications planned for DOS to function under Millennium. Some even found parades to reactivate the support of real mode DOS. However Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition obtains version 8.1 of MS-DOS.
Restoration system
Windows also introduced Me the Restauration system which was to make it possible to take a “stereotype” of the system to restore it later on in the event of handling error (bad installation of pilot, for example). However, this function, useful per moments, also slowed down the system, for example when it decided to carry out a point of restoration whereas the user occupied the machine. It also could, by restoring the system in its former state, to restore the virus that the user had removed since. This function was largely improved thereafter in Windows XP.
Stock management
An unperceived modification of the core last was an improvement of the stock management: the resources systems, often saturated under Windows 98, were allocated dynamically and either statically. There should not thus any more be errors of " miss ressources". Unfortunately, Microsoft forgot to change the API informing on the state of the resources, certain programs announced their saturation then whereas it of it was nothing!
Reception and succession
The users accommodated Windows Me rather coldly, primarily because of its random stability. The sales were thus rather thin, some clâmant even as it was finally only one minor update of Windows 98 and not a new version strictly speaking.Since, private individuals as professional largely described Windows Millenium like the worst operating system ever created by Microsoft.
Just a year after its exit, Windows was replaced to Me by Windows XP, system based on the core Windows NT, more stable and on which Windows 2000 was already built. If Windows could Me know a deferment thanks to the old plays which did not function on Windows XP, the progressive hegemony of this last quickly condemned it to a quasi-disappearance.
